Insomnia and depression

Posted by Iraku @iraku, Jun 21, 2012

I have noticed after the anti-depressant kicks in my insomnia has been slowly increasing. I feel wide awake for some period and then becoming so tired and thought that I could sleep but then when the light is off and I just slowly back to becoming wide awake again. I usually unable to sleep around mid night, the usual hour that I can fall asleep will moving away from 3 am to later and later. No matter how I tried to tired myself out and go to bed at normal hour, it won't happen. Please help!

This week has been quite tough physically. I tried to keep up with activities and stay on the high but every second day I woke up with aches and tiredness. On Monday acupuncture wasn't quite relaxing but painful so on Thursday Dr Lau left those fatigue points alone. I felt quite relaxing and feel less pain. I still feel the need to rest and don't think pushing myself physically would be a good idea. I will do my meditation and a light exercise a little later.

Iraku, thank you very much for the information. I am nt wrking now, I took early retirement but not old enough yet to get Medicare (or Medicade, which ever one it is) and my husband makes little money now, (economy stinks) so I just have to wait. However, cbahoskie explained a lot of thins to me that would involve arobics and I have to work my way moderately up to doing them but that I will try. I have very weak muscles, depression, anxiety attacks and more, so I need to work on one at a time. I am determined to get well. I am 63 and I look back 3 years ago and I had energy and I exercised. It seems like I just don't care anymore because I have just been strong to long, but I am coming back fighting. I do not want to be unhealthy and I do not want to depend on anyone to take care of me. Mu husbad is not the type to be burdened by anyone, even me. But God understands. Be Blessed, Gerri

Try exercising between 8 am and 10 am AND between 2 pm and 4 pm OUTDOORS. Couple that with melatonin 5 mg and magnesium with zinc ~400 mg magnesium and `25 mg of zinc one hour before bedtime to reset your clock. Go to bed at a set time, eg, 10 pm.

Thanks cbahoskie, the tea sounds interesting I'll check them out. I do try to exercise but it seems to put some tolls on CFS still I'm keeping up though cause I can see it's improving. I use my body as a guideline if it's too much pain the next day it means I overdone with, so far it seems a pretty good indication. I do really appreciate your comment. Have a nice day.

Hi Gerri, I know how that feels totally. I felt exactly the same way about need to work on one at a time. I felt my body has been used up before its time. Good positive thinking towards life helps a LOT! I'm trying not to let it gets me but slowly recover from it. Good to hear more about you and God bless.

True about exercise, the doctor who is my acupuncture suggests that too. The aching from arthritis seems to be quite overwhelming sometime that it's too painful to exercise so when the acupuncture works that is when exercise is a must. I do more and more exercise than the earlier time of CFS ...I do need to take it step by step too. I'm dreaded thinking about becoming depress again because I don't listen to my body. It gets very complicated when depression is involved. I focus on the depression first of all and now it's stable so I am able to set everything else straight. 🙂

Hi Iraku, how was yoour day today? I pray you get some relief. I had a great day today. I was going to start an exercise program today but I felt so good that I cleaned my bathroom and the workout room. I don't have a bedroom, I sleep in a recliner. MY H has the bedroom; he is a narsissist so I could not take any more of his verbal abuse and I moved out of his bedroom. We have a htree bedroom house but I made one room a make-up/sewing/prayer room. The other room I made into a workout room so I guess when I get bedroom furn. I will make me a bedroom. Anyway, I said all that to say this. The antidepressants, pain pills, muscle relaxers, etc. are because of the mental/action abuse I am sure. I was very healthy when I met him and when we got married, I got sick and I'm still sick. Since I know the culprit, I can regain my health with God's help. He is my strenght anyway, that waht he says in the Bible. I'm 63, a little to old to leave my H and go out on my own and afterall, my income is early retire, just a little over 600.00 a month, so who can start over on that. So.....I have decided to work on me, get me fixed and see what happens. I have come to believe (since yesterday) that I am a winner and I will make it. Uou can too. Fight for your health. Confess you will get better, confess you will be well and confess that you are a winnerand no one nor anything can hold you down. You CAN make it.

I am thrilled that I found this site (yesterday) Everone is so sweet and so thoughtful. I have no family and no one to talk to unless I am at church. So everyone here is so special to me because you answer each others posts and no one criticizes anyone but understands and is very sympathetic and caring. Thanks to everyone. God Bless!

Lets assume that you have "aching' that is coming from small blood vessel spasm, at least in part. This small blood vessel spasm could be "neurovascular" in origin with a nerve going to a small blood vessel (magnified by the millions of small blood vessels in actuality) that undergoes spasm, thereby limiting blood flow to the tissue (eg, muscle, tendon, other soft tissue, bone....etc) and thereby causing limitation of blood flow to the tissue. Patients with diabetes have "neurovascular causes" of their severe foot pain. One treatment efficacious for the neurovascular pain of diabetes that MIGHT be worthwhile trying is Benfotiamine, a fat soluble derivative of thiamine. Benfotiamine was synthesized in Germany ~60 years ago and has been shown in randomized control trials to treat the very painful peripheral neuropathy of some patients with diabetes and this neurovascular complication. Benfotiamine MIGHT be worthwhile trying at a dose of 300 mg (it comes in 150 mg caps) twice a day for a total daily dose of 600 mg. Benfotiamine as studied by the Germans and so far confirmed in US clinical trials has no known side effect though like even placebos "side effects" have been reported by individual patients. Consider identifying a reputable source and consider a trial of this over the counter agent. It works by facilitating the movement of thiamine into the inside of the cell (lining blood vessels and neurons). Inside the cell it is converted into a "cofactor" of an enzyme called Transketolase. Transketolase acts (via use of its cofactors thiamine pyrophosphate and magnesium) to shunt otherwise destructive glucose metabolites into productive versus non-productive pathways. So, a "non-productive pathway" could be: glucose metabolite --> oxidtive stress --> endothelial dysfunction --> microvascular dysfunction --> regional blood flow abnormality (eg restriction of blood flow to a muscle or group of muslces) --> "downstream pathologies" as diabetic painful peripheral neuropathy, severe unexplained muscle cramps, restless legs, gastroparesis, some forms of sleep apnea, kidney dysfunction, retinopathy, microvascular angina (especially in women as per Mayo Clinic Journal review article). Look up "Benfotiamine" in pubmed for more info on the latest possible therapeutic possibilities of Benfotiamine. By the way Benfotiamine does not in humans cross the blood brain barrier - another thiamine derivative synthesized in Japan, Allithiamine - Allicin + Thiamine found naturally in garlic does cross the blood brain barrier. Some individuals with unknown causes of pain can benefit by taking Benfotiamine that does negate the "non-productive pathway" above. Worth a potential "self-trial" after you do a thorough analysis of pubmed articles on Benfotiamine.
