Scratchy voice due to seasonal allergy

Posted by suriyaraj @suriyaraj, Jun 4, 2021

Hi,

My daughter is 4 yr old and she have scratchy voice and small tiny red dots around her eye. It started 4 weeks back when spring starts. We are in madison Wisconsin. We consulted her paediatrician they said due to postnasal drip due to allergies and citrizen for 2 weeks. We completed the dose. BUT still her voice didnt change and it worsens too on some days.

Please clarify the below queries.

1. Will it go away on own once season changed .
2. Do I need to consult any allergy specialist or ENT specialist for this one.
3. Can Allegra medicine helps to cure this

Really much worried abt her voice.please help

Seasonal allergies are, common, including in children. Usually we refer to allergies as being managed or controlled, not cured.
Most children at age 4 can safely take antihistamines under the direction of the pediatrician, including benadryl, cetirizine or Allegra throughout the allergy season.
A scratchy voice is common with postnatal drip and allergic rhinitis, and should clear when whatever she is allergic to ends. If it becomes too difficult to accept, consulting an allergist for the exact source of her problem would be warranted, however many would consider her a bit young for testing.
We have been dealing with this for 4 generations in my family, and while it is annoying, especially to the sufferer, it is not dangerous or life-threatening.

A little detective work by you may help determine her worst triggers so she can avoid them, the most common seasonal problems are tree pollen, grass, and mold. Other common triggers are house dust, house pets with feathers or fur, and foods. A good HEPA air filter and keeping doors and windows closed can help a lot. Don't avoid having her play out in fresh air, but have her shower or bathe and wash hair before bed to get rid of pollen that might irritate.

I will be 70 in a couple of months. I have had year-round allergies ever since I can remember. My children have seasonal allergies and my son skin allergies as I do.

As Sue said there is no cure.. just try to keep the symptoms under control.

At 4 years old she may be too young to gargle with warm salty water. You could try and teach her how… but do not get upset if she is not able to do it. Also you can try doing a saline rinse with a bottle or a neti pot (I have a friend who has done this with his children since they were one. I suggest over a sink or the tub... it can get wet) .. there are also saline sprays. Saline will help rinse the allergens out of the nasal passages and keep them moist.. and some of the post nasal drip from going into her throat. Warm liquids will help soothe her throat. When my daughter was 10 she warmed lemon koolaid in the microwave and it helped her. Your daughter might like real lemonade, tea or broth.

Everyone is different… Allegra does nothing for me, but works great for others. There is a recommended minimum age for certain medications. Talk to your doctor … or pharmacist if buying over the counter … about medications appropriate for her symptoms and age.

My granddaughter was allergic to most every formula and breast milk when she was born. She had to have a special, expensive, awful smelling formula to drink. She finally got over that allergy after about a year. Infants can be tested for food allergies.. not sure about what age airborne ones.

Has your daughter ever had these symptoms before? Has her diet changed recently? Have you brought flowers or plants into the home recently? Have you changed laundry detergents or fabric softeners. .. or air fresheners? Has anyone changed deodorants or colognes, etc?

My son and I cannot use perfumed detergent and fabric softeners. … nor bath soaps. I have learned that vinegar and washing (baking) soda are great fabric softeners. Vinegar is my main cleaner for the house.

When we brought our son home from the hospital after he was born in 1972 we had him in a portable crib.. we lived in a small house trailer. The crib was placed under a window. He got so stuffy he could barely breathe. By time we got him to the doctor he was fine. The curtains were dusty. My husband cleaned them… and all was good.

I wear a dust mask when I am outside during a bad bout of allergies. I wear a hat to keep the pollen off my hair. I rinse my face and arms when I come back inside.

All will be fine… just figure out what works best for her symptoms. … that said.. If your daughter starts running a fever call or take her back to the doctor. It rarely happens but a sinus infection or infection of the larynx can come about with allergies.

Hi sorry to jump in but trying to find best spot to ask; Age 78 and first time ever late spring seemed to get allergic reaction to something, maybe, flowers in house... neck and ear burning - long story short it has been 3 months now and sometimes cheeks, front neck, upper chest, ear/s or sometimes other body parts are flushed but half the time not flushed but still burning as it i as I type now last 2 hours.... Clinic nurse practitioner didn't know what and also have laundry list of other illnesses.... we thought either see dermatologist or neurologist as do have some p.n. She said try and keep track of what happens preceding this burning flesh... but nothing added up until tonight. Most of day was almost ok and made supper with prepackaged cheese scalloped potatoes, i made meat loaf and yellow beans from garden; as eating it started top of chest/neck and soon right then left cheek then face and nose and top of head- not sweating but for fist time checked internet which said could be sulphits, sodium nitrate or msg... well for first time in life checked potato box and has both msg and sulphites in; could this possible be the hidden cause? I ran to computer to check sulphides and astonished - what's left to eat without them..also maybe on a "fool's errand" as it still may be something else but all I can say is the burning lasts hours, different times of days etc. and sometimes red sometimes not; ANY SUGGESTIONS GRATEFULLY RECEIVED. Nurse made appointment for dermatologist in January... but what if i wait four months only for him to say; nope, note under my umbrella .... thankyou !!!!

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, Valerie!
What you describe is happening to you sounds like an allergy to something you ingest, since the rash doesn’t always stay in one place.
I agree it’s a long time to wait until January to see a Dermatologist.
An Allergist probably would be a better choice- also trying to get an appointment as soon as possible.
Here is a link to Mayo Clinic’s description of food allergies.
Some of the reactions they describe are extreme.
However, there are some foods or chemical additives that only give you flushing and burning like you describe.

Have you tried taking any antihistamine allergy medications, such as Benadryl?

Hello and thank you will read that web site now. The concern with antihistamine meds is that I have had chronic dry eye for about 20 years (and narrow angle glaucoma for 4) and I will double-check but think once read for dry eyes not to take antihistamines... I am thinking of getting one of those mail away tests for food sensitivities

Update - maybe! So process of elimination and might sound odd but both spouse and I not feeling up to cooking or eating and last few months I must admit at lunchtime its a few slices of brand name Bologna in bread, he has some tomato and pickles and cheese with it but I had plain - and some cookies and tea.... just a habit at noon. While waiting to see dermo I have been experimenting; even changed my dry eye drops; checking ingredients etc., and did not have Bologna for couple of weeks - flushed burning face gradually got less and less until last few days nothing.. so tried the cold meat again today and in 2 hours nose was reddish and right cheek starting; had a nap for hour and when awoke both cheeks - as usual not bright red but definitely flushed and definitely burning! Then has gone down to upper chest and front of neck. So, cannot 'prove' it but not eating any more and will keep trying to read ingredients on other prepared foods. Actually on package of meat says has Sodium phosphate; potassium lactate, sodium erythorbate, sodiuim diacetate, sodium nitrite and of course meat, milk, spices (doesn't say what ones) etc..... hope have spelled correctly .... why at my older age did I not at least check the ingredients! Seems preservatives, antimicrobial agent, keeps meat pink, moist etc., but have eaten over the years and never had a flushed burning face... wonder if food sensitivity test will uncover.. haven't heard back from Clinic since I requested it, will phone tomorrow.... actually hope it is the meat and can stop searching and hurting! J. Thanks for help.

Daughter suggested cold packs and i bought those tiny round ones, keep in fridge not freezer and help a bit but happening so often now cant walk around holding them to face and when first put on it hurts....but seems not a common problem, pain 8/10 thank Goodness even after many hours it goes away .... sorry I turned the subject to my problem instead of allergies but am at a loss.....now down neck and chin etc. Thoughts to everyone suffering from known and unknown causes!!! Hi Valerie!
So sorry you have not gotten any relief!
Burning face syndrome is also called erythromelalgia.
There doesn’t seem to be a cure but there are medications that can help with the symptoms you have.
Here is an article from Cleveland Clinic-
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22752-erythromelalgia
You could try to get an appointment at a major university medical center such as Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic.
Don’t give up- there are ways to control your symptoms.
By the way, do you have an ENT helping you with your hearing?
I’m your age too and have too many annoying medical conditions that I never expected I had to deal with.
Give it a try to see someone a a place like Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic!
