Posted by wendylsmith44 @wendylsmith44, Aug 7, 2019

Coming in to Jacksonville on August 14th. Gabriel house has a waiting list.

My best friend has been asked to arrive August 13th begin a 7 to 14 day process to receive a lung transplant. Not being able work due to illness we anticipated staying at Gabriel house and we found out they have waiting list.Everyone who said they would help has disapeard.

Is there any resources???
I'm frieghtented that without lodging that this means Kevin's chances at life are in jeopardy.
Plz message me as time is not on our side with any information. we live hours away and need to stay in Jacksonville for this process

Hello!

My husband and I are going to be heading for Jacksonville soon so I can get a new liver, and we need to figure out an accessible place to stay for the duration, and we absolutely must have a decent kitchen. Where have others stayed when you're there for treatment? On our previous visits, we've stayed at hotels, but we weren't there for more than 2 weeks at a time. I got a list of some options from one of the social workers there, but it was a short list and had few details.

Thanks!

Jedi, How exciting to be soon getting a new liver.
We have several members who have given tips about accommodation at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville in this related discussion:
- Lodging in Jacksonville, FL: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/lodging-in-jacksonville-fl/

As a transplant recipient, I know you will be in need of a long-term stay, so I moved your question to this existing discussion about transplant stays in JAX where members are talking about options available including the Gabriel House of Care Jacksonville, FL

See more information in this blog post:
- The Convenience of Transplant Hospitality Houses https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/transplant/newsfeed-post/the-convenience-of-transplant-hospitality-houses/

Fellow Mayo JAX transplant recipients and caregivers like @gaybinator @corn50 @tjgisewhite @coastalgirl might have additional tips.

Jedi, have you already inquired at the Gabriel House?

@wendylsmith44 We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Beach Blvd. They gave us a Mayo patient discount but I don’t remember how much. We also stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on the Mayo campus but it was expensive but walking distance to the Mayo buildings.

Always ask for the Mayo discount! Retail, restaurants, lodging and more.

We stayed at hotel about a block or two from the clinic. We had a great time at the clinic and also exploring the beach which is close by. It was a positive experience!

We rented a short term furnished apartment through Corporate Suites. They have many options. You may want to try there.

There's a Courtyard Mariott on the Mayo campus, and a Residence Inn with shuttle service to/ from Mayo every hour about a mile away.

Thanks! I'll have a look at Gabriel House - I think It's ruled it out, but I hadn't seen that they have kitchen spaces available, which my husband and I consider essential. I'll check out the other links, too - thanks!

@jedikaiti, My husband and I were at Mayo Rochester for my transplant in 2009. We stayed at the Gift of Life Transplant House for 11 weeks. I don't know the specifics of the Gabriel House and I hope one of our members will share their experience staying there.
In the mean time, I want to say that our experience at GOL was perfect for us. Based on our experience in Rochester, I definitely would encourage you to check out the Gabrielle House. At GOL the huge community kitchen provided ample space for food prep, cooking and socialization (if desired). It was clean, and sanitized, and we felt completely safe there. We could have as much or as little privacy as we desired.

Jedi, Do you have any questions about liver transplant?

We stayed at Marriott a few from main buildings during evaluation. We are now looking at Gabriel house for post transplant month. This is in jacksonville and I am on waiting list presently. Any information on Gabriel house would be great. Ty

My wife ad I rented an Air B&B in Jacksonville Beach area that was 5 miles from Mayo Clinic for my Lung Transplant evaluation and approval processes for 18 days. It worked out great for us because it was pet friendly so we didn’t need to board our fur baby. As others have said ask for Mayo discount as well.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
