Metal and gritty feeling in the mouth/tongue

Posted by Kdawn @kdawn32, Sep 25, 2017

About 3 weeks in I talked to my Advanced certified nurse practitioner about my mouth having a weird sensation as if I had bitten down hard on spoon (I had not). It happened several times a day. Overall this went on for 9 weeks and include my jaws aching. On week three I saw the nurse who's response was UGHH stop talking about that. Helpful, not. It did stop but now I have a gritty feel all over my mouth, jaw, tongue, and the aching is still there (grittyness 24/7, aching periodically through the day). Anyone have an idea on how to better explain myself or how to get the doctors/nurse to realize this is not fun? I have an appointment to see a new doctor, but could not get in for almost another month. I also have a regular scheduled dental appointment this week. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.~K

Hi I am experiencing similar symptoms going on 3 months now. I am extremely miserable and it has taken over my daily life. I have been to regular dentist, all clear, periodontist, all clear, doctors, all clear of Lupus, diabetes, etc. now being referred to Oral surgeon/facial pain specialist. What is your outcome? I’m desperate. Thanks

Hi @heatchad, @colleenyoung brought me into this discussion and I see that you’re experiencing mouth pain?

Can you tell me a little more about what you’re feeling? I’m going to ask a few questions that might narrow things down and it might help with your discussion with the surgeon tomorrow…
Where the pain is located? Is it sharp or a dull/ache? A Zapping pain?
On the top or the bottom? In your cheek area or under the tongue, or in the jawbone? Is this in your TMJ area? Both sides or one?
Are your teeth sensitive to hot and cold? Or chewing?
If you bite slowly together, does one tooth touch the opposing tooth first?

I noticed in your next reply, that you had gum graft surgery. It does take a little while to fully recover, that discomfort is localized and shouldn’t be causing any other mouth issues for you and certainly not going on 3 months. It’s awful being so miserable that long.

I echo Colleen in that it’s good you’re seeing a surgeon/pain specialist tomorrow. Will you let me know what they say?

Roof of mouth feels fuzzy almost like it’s peeling and sometimes feels dry and then sometimes slimy then dull pain creeps up throughout the day on bottom back four teeth area.It feels tight and light throbbing. No actual tooth pain. All teeth were checked for sensitivity yesterday at regular dentist. Full panorama X-rays and she said everything looks good. Both dentist and perio said gum graft looks great

Has this all changed for you since you had the gum graft surgery? Does the area where the graft was removed from the roof of your mouth feel any differently than the rest of the palate?

I have a few other lines of thought.
1) Has anyone checked your tongue? Often, if you’re ‘feeling’ unusual things on the roof of your mouth, it can actually be a change in the normal texture of your tongue. For example, someone with geographic tongue, where there are smooth patches on the tongue, can make your palate feel fuzzy or slimy.
If your tongue is constantly heading to the roof of your mouth, it puts strain on the muscles in your tongue and might be causing the ache in the molar region. You might also be clenching your teeth together unwittingly which can make your jaws ache. I’m wondering if buying a mouthguard might help. You can get one at a drug store. They’re used to protect teeth for sports. But they’re inexpensive and would work to keep your teeth from clenching…just to see if that makes a difference.

2) Have you switched toothpaste in the past 3 months? Over my decades as a dental assistant there were many patients who had issues with changing mucosa (tissue) in their mouths. Their tongues, sometimes the roof of the mouth and cheeks would peel and slough off. It was due to the harshness of the chemicals in the toothpaste. Switching to a non-whitening toothpaste or one that doesn’t have a harsh peppermint oil would be suggested.

2) If you use a mouth rinse designed to kill germs and it contains alcohol or peroxide, try stopping for a few weeks. You could try a gentle rinse such as Spry, which contains Xylitol and helps promote oral healing.
Easier yet is using a warm, mild salt water rinse several times a day. There are specific bacteria that are normal to our mouths and if it is killed off it changes the flora of the mouth.

3) Do you have acid reflux? That can cause some some changes in your mouth. Do you wake up with your mouth feeling this way?

4) Any change in diet? You mentioned not being able to eat well for the past 3 months. Can you pinpoint the reason? Do your teeth hurt while chewing or is your mouth or tongue burning?

5) Does your mouth feel dry? A dry mouth is frequently the cause of a slimy feel. It can be from certain medications or medical conditions.

I know I’ve asked a ton of questions, but hopefully we can help figure out what’s going on and get your life back to normal. Let me know if any of these things ring a bell for you. Good luck at your appointment tomorrow and let me know what you find out, ok?

I am so glad to hear this is not just ME! I have very salty mouth with grit from oozing from gums. Forms on my teeth and gums and melts of with tongue then it’s burning and ulcers on tongue. The coating that melts off is crunchy like the mm coating but salty and burns. Dentist could not see anything, Dr sent to surgeon but I’ve made appointment to periodontal which will return to him Tuesday with a follow up. He saw nothing also but concerned. Please let me know if you have found anything out!

What treatments do you do??

I’ve done so many things to help it and nothing really helped except the passage of time and not obsessing about it. When it’s really bad I use lidocaine in my tongue. Most of the time I chew gum and use Therabreath lozenges.
