I am suffering from this condition for a long time. I’ve seen ENT specialists to no avail . Any suggestions?

According to this article "High stress and anxiety levels can stimulate the stress response in the body, which often alters a person's sense of taste. Anxiety can cause dry mouth, which frequently results in a bitter taste."

Are you experiencing high levels of stress around the same time as this started happening?

Having an awful time with extremely dry mouth and terrible taste in mouth after eating lasting for hours. Brushing flossing rinsing… nothing seems to be helping! Thank you for any thoughts on this.

@dancing1, Interestingly @abdulhamid50 asked a similar question only yesterday. See my response above. They experience the dry mouth and bitter taste while sleeping where as you notice it after eating.

Since you posted your question in the autoimmune diseases group and you also have Sjogren's, scleroderma and Raynaud's, it sounds like you might be investigating the possible link to autoimmune diseases.

Do you get this during sleep as well? Do certain foods trigger the dry mouth and terrible taste reaction? Is this a new symptom for you?

This has been going on for guide a while … I just thought it was from the extreme dry mouth. But recently the terrible taste in my mouth has so worsened. I do have it at night. I’ve had a terrible time sleeping the last two years but finally in last six weeks getting 6 hrs a night. That is great for me. In the morning my mouth and taste is terrible so I rinse many times brush with no paste( paste in am makes it worse) then rinse more and wipe all my teeth with a paper towel then try to rinse again and drink a glass of water. Last night after eating dinner and trying a new protein shake I felt terribly sick. I took my Gaviscon antacid and it did nothing! I had a terrible time going to sleep and for the first time in A long while had acid reflux. So nauseous! Finally fell asleep. I’m sorry to explain this so difficult for me to even understand. Doctor had told me if I lose anymore weight I might have to go on a feeding tube but I think my weight is staying normal for me now. I’m trying new things all the time. This seems to be worse since I had my second Covid booster but I try not to think that’s why. I have had GI issues for years before the autoimmune difficulties were found. I have an ileostomy also. Whatever this is the bad taste ( even with brushing three times a day and especially after eating is getting worse. The taste also especially the last few weeks. Thank you for your kindness and reading this poorly written explanation. I used to use biotine products and they helped but it stopped helping.

@dancing1. this sounds just awful . I have some questions for you: Have you consulted with your dentist? Is a rheumatologist following you for your autoimmune diseases, and what does he/she say? Have you researched your medications to see if they could be the culprit?
Two days ago @colleenyoung posted some good resources on this topic. Be sure to read them.
Please keep me posted on what you may learn. Will you do that?

I have an appointment with my dentist next week. I have not found a new Rhematogist close but my Physician has set me up with a dietician finally covered by my insurance and I have a video appointment with them next week. I could call my rheumatologist that I saw a year ago and confirmed all my autoimmune problems at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. It’s far to travel but maybe I could talk to them on phone. My last GP that retired had me use childrens benadral and Mylanta to swish in mouth two years ago. This problem had cleared up so I quit doing this but it start it again now to see if this helps. Thank you so appreciate your reply. Last night was the worst I’ve been ever with the nausea. It’s a struggle to cope with the awful taste, mouth sores and thickness with swallowing. But the nausea made it much worse. Just so fatigued! I must get more nutrition they say but it’s not easy finding foods you can swallow with sjogrens. Thank you again! So much!

Anyone who has acid reflux should sleep with the entire upper part of the body raised by about 8 inches. This can be achieved by raising the head of the bed by putting a couple of bricks or books under the head of the bed, or even better buying a mobile bed where you can adjust the height of the head and foot ( Budget permitting). Acid reflux can eventually lead to esophageal cancer if not attended to. I use 3 medications to control it but sleeping with the head of my bed raised was essential for treating my condition. Also eating SMALL portions at mealtime. Snacking is a good thing because it helps ensure that there is something in the stomach. That reduces the burning acidic feeling of an empty stomach, thus preventing the stomach acids working on the stomach lining. However if, at mealtime, I take in more than my stomach can comfortably handle no medicine will help.

Thank you so much. I do have our bed elicited and sleeping with more pillows which raises me more also. I had overcome the acid reflux for over a year with my very careful eating methods. I’m only able to eat very small meals but this acid reflux had just changed and come back with the awful mouth taste in the evenings. Thank you for this reminder. I will check by bed again to see if it is correctly raised. Maybe I’ll half to cut my already small meals to even smaller. Sometimes lately even the small orgain protein drink is too much for me to consume. Thanks again! I have had this issue of GI problems for over twenty years maybe more but have had to cut my eating back extremely over the past two years. But this terrible taste is the worst and nausea it brings.
