Dry mouth

Posted by @rostrevor, Sun, Jul 29 9:29pm

I have had coated tongue and dry mouth for 3. 5 months. Now mainly dry mouth. Have ruled out gastro , ear nose and throat and blood work and urine samples pretty normal as was ultrasound. Trying dry mouth mouthwash tooth paste and lozenges. Very temporary relief. Never had this problem before. Had bypass 9 years ago and am on beta blocker and atacand and Crestor . Maybe drug related but same drugs for 9 years did not cause it. Anyone have any ideas.

Hi, @rostrevor — that sounds like a frustrating problem having dry mouth. You've been really proactive in trying remedies and also ruling out possible causes, which is great.

Here is some information from Mayo Clinic on dry mouth that may be useful: https://mayocl.in/2EQqw7o.

I'd like to introduce you to some other Connect members who have mentioned dry mouth, such as @lioness @fleure @jeanw28 @netty @redhead63 @fsumom6. Hoping they may have some insights for you. Also, @alpaca may have some thoughts.

@rostrevor, have you gotten to check with your doctor or pharmacist to see what they think?

I have seen specialists including special dentist who confirmed that I am not making enough saliva. All products I mentioned and chewing sugar free gum helps for a short time but the condition continues. I never had this condition before but it’s been going on for 3.5 months. Maybe meds I take is causing it.

I have dry mouth as a result of radiation to the head and neck. I know that there are several medications that cause it and a few that relieve it but nothing lasts for extended periods. Taking water with you everywhere can help but better still are the gels like Oral 7 or Oralieve. Xylimelts are effective at night. You have to be more cautious with your teeth with dry mouth as teeth need to be bathed in saliva in order to build themselves up continuously.

Hi Rostrevor

I have Sjogren's Syndrome and this includes a dry mouth. I have been prescribed Pilocarpine or Salagen which I can take up to four times a day but I only usually need to take it once a night. I have had no side effects with this medication and it works really effectively. Please ask if you can have it prescribed. It is a rather old fashioned drug but it is cheap and effective.

@rostrevor hi I have dry mouth but have found Biotene mouthwash at night helps will definitely not take certain medicines. I thought I was going to choke on the dry mouth and throat but biotene gave me relief.I now don't take many meds as I believe in natural herbs ,foods and xylimelts

My dentist says it can be related to aging. Oh joy! Sugar free lemon drops help the most. Lemon ginger tea helps. Stress relief like exercise seems to help

@netty good advice I drink fresh lemon water with turmeric in it every morning I love ginger-tumeric tea

was brushing my teeth and thought of a couple of things

it was stated at the beginning that the same drugs for 9 years would not cause the new problem of dry mouth but what you might want to consider is that your body changes and hence the side effects of drugs might change. It might be worth double checking the side effects of the drugs you were taking

Also if you have seen your dentist he knows your situation and we know dry mouth causes cavateis or makes us more suseptable anyway. My dentist has prescribed for me a tooth paste that has 10x the fluoride to try to hold at bay cavateis that I got we think from my chemo and resulting dry mouth.

these are just thoughts from a tired brain …as you can see tired brain can't type or spell lol

Colgate Neutrafluor 5000 I think it is called is what I use. It has the most fluoride of any toothpastes we can get in New Zealand. Expensive though. PS, I blame my keyboard for typos. I never learnt to touch type!

Hi, @rostrevor – just wanted to check in with you and see if the pilocarpine (Salagen) you were going to try for your dry mouth has made any difference for you so far?

Before I take the salagen I want my doctor to test to see if I have Sjogrens. I think a lip biopsy or saliva gland test can confirm. Meantime I am using every dry mouth over the counter product there is. They all help for a short time but my tongue is still dry after 4.5 months.Could be drug interaction but I would have to stop and start some drugs to see. Seeing ear nose and throat specialist this week.
