Unknown abdominal pain

Posted by amm97 @amm97, May 16, 2022

Hi I am a 24 year old female I have been having upper right and left abdominal on and off consistently since Aug 2021. I have also lost 30 lbs so far since then without a major appetite change. So far MRI, CTA, colonoscopy, endoscopy have all came back normal. I had a duplex ultrasound done which showed narrowing in a couple of the arteries in my abdomen but the CTA and MRI didn’t show anything. What do I do next.

There are some similarities between our stories . Do these areas hurt all of the time for you. Mine is below the xiphoid process, down the middle to lower pelvic. And hurt at a pain level 6 to 8.5 all of the time.

There is nothing worse than chronic pain hurting this bad. Have you worked with a big hospital pain management department. What you probably have is abdominal nerve pain. They can try various injections. It’s tough, my mind can’t handle two years of this pain, it’s hard hard hard to keep pushing on.

Right now the pain is on and off. I have not been worked up for pain management yet at a hospital yet.

I also had my gallbladder taken out this time last year. So two years ago I slowly stopped eating due to a lack of appetite. I am a male 6ft tall 228 lbs to 179lbs in eleven months then had GB out. Slowly started eating to now year later gained it all back by eating late at night. I’m struggling to keep on going with such chronic pain.

I might be eating a smaller amount at meal times but still the same food. The duplex ultrasound sound narrowing of the celiac and sma. I’ve actually researched MALS quite a bit and I think this is still a possibility even though the CTA doesn’t show it. A vascular surgeon told me that the CTA doesn’t show it and that he doesn’t think it’s MALS. The surgeon said that the ultrasound isn’t reliable because it’s “operator dependent”. But the research I’ve done said that the duplex ultrasound may replace the CTA someday.

Hi! Hopefully your CT scan had pictures taken on inspiration and expiration, otherwise they would not be able to see the “hook” that causes mals. My doctor had me do the ct and duplex ultrasound for comparison. I hope you find answers.

I think it did, they had me hold my breath and let it out. The ultrasound showed the hooked appearance.

I have pretty much exhausted the various avenues of pain remediation. I am now waiting to install a spinal stimulator. I have had some postive results during the test procedures.

It sound like you are suffering from Abdominal Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES). Steps are first taking the Carnett Test (youtube), second, triggerpoint shots to area for temporary relief until you find a surgeon who is familiar with ACNES. I had my T8, T9 and T10 nerves cut and left hospital same day cured. Dr Gillespie at St Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix does the procedure. If you need more information i'd be happy to help.

I am sorry for your pain and hope you find the cause of it. In the meantime, my old fashioned remedy may help - a heating pad! I too had moderate to agonizing pain in my upper abdomen, about 2-3 inches above my belly button. No cause was found. My physical therapist suggested a heating pad for 20-30 minutes. I use Nature Creation which is microwaveable. It works all the time. I hope this is a good day for you! Sue

After 1.5 yrs 5 Doctors I was determined to find an answer. 2 Gastro said ibs. Internist said pretty much the same. Gyno takes me seriously. Thorough exam and internal sonogram to check for uterine or ovarian cancer. Both can cause similar symptoms. Everything checked out. I have pain stomach uproar and lower pain daily. Went to my neurologist to review neck and lower back issues. We start talking about how sick I’ve been and I still can’t get a serious diagnosis or relief. He looked at me and said I know what you have “abdominal migraine” and hands me a sample box. He took one out put it under my tongue 15-20 minutes later no pain. That was 12 days ago. I’m feeling quite normal energetic, happy. Doctor said it isn’t that uncommon and he treats it quite often. I am beyond grateful! But of course the meds aren’t covered by Medicare so figure 2k a month! Ouch
