High Cholesterol: how do you control it?

Posted by doedoe13 @doedoe13, Jul 1, 2018

I have very unusual cholesterol scores. Both are high. My Doctor says not to worry because the good is high and outweighs the bad. Here are the numbers cholesterol is 270 LDL is. 164 HDL 70.6. Do I just not worry like my Doctor said? Any ideas?

Hi John, It's worked pretty well for my husband and me. Swanson used to have a Plant Sterols formula, but it hasn't been available for a while, unless it's back in stock now. I've used the betasitosterol instead. I just got lab work and my numbers were good.

Hi Teri, Is this the one you order? Was thinking of trying it out to see if it helps with the "flow" and the help with lowering cholesterol would be a bonus 🙃 -- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091QXORU/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2

Hi John, The last one I ordered was 160 mg, 60 capsules, and we take it twice a day. My husband also takes Flo-Max. I think he's doing better since we started this. Did you check the prices at Swanson? They have frequent sales - 30% of your order, or Swanson Brand or buy one get one for free, and free shipping over $50.00 (though not to Alaska or Hawaii).
I've been buying from them for years and they have excellent customer service. Delivery will be much slower than Amazon though. I hope it helps!

I take the generic form Tamsulosin but it's the same as FloMax. I'm hoping this might help a little better than the Rx. I did order the one from Amazon so will see how it goes and check the Swanson site when reordering. Thanks Teri!

My husband takes the generic too, but I can never remember the name.

Hi @johnbishop and @callalloo, I take plant sterols, currently betasitosterol, to manage my cholesterol. The doctor was not concerned because I always had high HDL, but after open heart surgery for a mitral valve repair, I was put on a statin, briefly, because I declined to take it. The plant sterols have reduced my cholesterol. I purchase them from Swanson Vitamins.

Thanks! My former acupuncturist cannot tolerate statins and told me he took plant sterols but I forgot to ask him for a name before he returned to China. I'm happy to try anything as diet will only get me so far with reducing cholesterol.

@callalloo, krill oil is effective in reducing "bad" and increasing "good" cholesterol. It offers another non statin option in your quest.

@doedoe13
Doctors used to believe high HDL offset high LDL but recent studies show that’s not true. My last numbers were
Total 194
HDL. 68
LDL. 109
My doctor called and nearly went ballistic.
She told me she wanted those numbers down and to go on a low fat diet. I had been eating beef everyday to help increase my hemoglobin levels since I donate blood products twice a month which it did but shot my numbers up. I was advised to eat more fish. I manage to gag salmon down now and then but not enough to satisfy her. I switched to chicken so in July hopefully numbers will be better.
You should do everything possible to lower your numbers for your own good.
Take care
Jake
