Covid and AFib Connection?
Hello Everyone,
I am curious and would like to ask this group a question. I have AFib but had not had an event for over a year except for last November. In early February of this year I took the Phizer Vaccine for Covid and had several Afib events with one lasting over a month even with cardioversion. I ended up having an ablation in May and the electrophysiologist found an enlarged and scarred atrium.
I have been doing well and am still on Flecainade, Metoporal and Eliquis. He is about to take the Flecainade away. It is time for my booster shot and I am scared that it will put me into Afib again. My Electrophysiologist and Cardiologist at Mayo said they don't feel that the vaccine had anything to do with my Afib events starting up again.
Has anyone here experienced this? I am debating whether or not to cancel my appointment next week or just take the shot. My doctors said it is better to take the booster than to get Covid.

I still wear a mask when out and mingling with other people. I go into an 'abundance of caution' mode when the stakes are high and prevention-efforts-hope is negligible. This virus is unlike anything in recorded history, starting with its extremely suspect provenance (who actually needs to be playing with gain-of-function except for as WMD really?) through it mutation history. There is virtually no longitudinal study as to the permanent effects of any of its variations and I hope to remain ineligible for participation in them...

Never had it before. Never took any more vaccines as Im dealing with the Afib since.

1 ReactionMy experience with the Moderna vaccine and afib are the same. An electrophysiologist told me last week that he believes the vaccine caused my condition and that it would improve with time. Mine has not improved and I take metoprolol, eliquis and I am considering ablation.

3 ReactionsMy Doctor told me “maybe”. He said things could go either way for me, but not to fear death. Most severe he described as pacemaker, and best outcome self healing. I’m waiting for MRI for better idea of state of heart overall.

2 ReactionsThe Afib is not likely to go away on its own, but with cardiovert to put you back in sync, you may not go into AFib again. I had an Afib history prior to 2012 but went for 9 years without it. However, 3 weeks after my 1st Moderna shot, I was back in Afib. Did a cardiovert and a year later went into afib. Another cardiovert and I'm still in sync. I've had the two Moderna shots a year ago and WILL NOT be getting any boosters. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't get any shots.

I had my two Pfizer vax Feb and March 2021 and the Maderna booster Nov 2021. I went into AFib the first week of Jan 2022. Does anyone know if there is any research yet to back up this connection between COVID shots and AFib? Is there any possible recourse we may have?

1 ReactionThe basic connection between COVID and heart is well understood I think. Aa I understand it one effect is the spikes plug into ACE receptors which cause construction of capillaries to the point flow stops and the single file of blood in there coagulates. The famous black “COVID toes” is a visible manifestation. The Moderna “Spikevax” programs your tissue to manufacture the spikes only. The quantity varies by person. These spikes act the same and cause vasoconstriction which also varies by personal sensitivity. Anti coagulation drugs I think are very important with aFib. I was on them when I stupidly took the booster and heart went crazy anyway. I asked a doctor why she didn’t prescribe at least an aspirin to folks getting vaccinated and she said anything that might be construed as causing vaccine hesitancy was severely discouraged.
Off label prescription of angiotensin II blocker meds like Micardis is happening, but I wonder if this is the actual mechanism of heart damage. I still am trying to learn whether damaged heart nerves will regenerate or not. Of course I don’t really know if that’s what I have.
