Too much cold air entering the nostrils

Posted by learningstudent @learningstudent, Apr 16, 2020

Well...Recently I have developed a weird symptom. I think I have had it for a month. My nose has no mucus, booger and when I inhale, I feel like there is too much air entering my nostrils so I have to use something to block part of it. Otherwise I feel so uncomfortable and suffocated. My right nostril is getting worse, there is no congestion or anything and sometimes my face or nose seems to lose sensation. When the turbinates work normally, they will shrink and swell up and provide warm air but this does not happen to my nose. All the air I breathe in is cold and is not warm at all. I am just wondering what causes it because for people who have atrophic sinusitis, they will have nose blockage. But I do not, I feel my nose is so empty and too much air entering them when inhaling even my nose is not dried. I hope somebody could help.

I have checked my nose, I do not see any turbinates, only hair and the holes of my nose. I have never done any turbinate reduction or nasal surgery.

I have a cold, and have the neti pot out in use today. I use tap water with the salt, but I boil it first, cool the water, and then use the neti pot.

Well I do not have any nasal pain but instead the nose or nostrils feel so empty. When I inhale there seems to be a force of airflow entering my nostrils, making me feel so uncomfortable band hard to breathe. My nose seems to lose function of how to stop the air, humidifies and moisturize the air I inhale.

Welcome, @melisgonza616. Are you experiencing similar nasal symptoms?

I have been experiencing something kind of similar ever since I got the 2nd Covid-19 vaccine my nose has been giving me issues. At first my symptoms were having a lot of pressure in my nose and my head. So ENT ordered a ct scan and on oct 5 I got it done and only thing that showed was “right maxillary sinus mucosal thickening” with no sign of sinus infection. I was given Sudafed for 4 days and Allegra 180 but I had some reactions that were making it worse especially the Sudafed. So i stopped taking it, and now I have been seeing an allergist and last week we did environmental skin test and nothing showed up, didn’t read to anything other than like a tree I dk the provider was just as shocked I didn’t even react to “histamine” so anyway, I have to go back tomorrow for the next two sessions to see if I’ll react to anything else. So fast forward I went back to ENT because I felt an odd sensation with my nose almost like numbness inside my nose and idk what is going on I was also hearing little cackling noises back there now I’m not as much I have never had a nasal surgery in my life and rn my nose is feeling too open, and sensitive to the cold and airflow. It’s so strange cuz I’ve never had this problem before. My turbinates swell up and un swell but I feel like something is going on. I also have blood and crust in my nose I’ve been irrigating it once a day, it’s been burning me though and had stopped using Flonase because that’s been making my nose dry and it’s still currently dry still after using for like a week now. Idk if possibly this is something to do with my nasal nerves or if I just got a bad reaction to covid vaccine but I’m going on 3 months now not feeling like myself. What do you advise?

Hi melisgonza616,
I used to have lots of issues with my sinuses and it sounds like you have a lot of inflammation yet. Have you tried any prednisone and possibly a water soluble salve called Muciprocin? My ENT had me put it in my saline sinus rinse bottle. It helped me along with prednisone. Also there are 2 types of Flonase. One with a green cap and one with the blue. The green capped one contains fluticasone propionate while Flonase Sensimist (blue) contains fluticasone furoate. I prefer the Sensimist since it seems to be less drying and doesn’t cause me headaches. I also like Ayr, which is just plain saline spray which really soothes and moisturizers my sinus tissues. I carry that in my purse during the winter. Hopefully you get some relief soon!

Thank you, Juli. I have been having somewhat similar symptoms and have similar problems. I was told I had mid segment pain and prescribed amitriptilline 10mg. But the problem isn't really pain it is pressure over the bridge of my nose and nose "sensitivity". Often my nose would feel very cold. So I have stopped all nasal sprays, even saline spray, for a while, and started, like you, inhalation in the morning and nasal irrigation in the evening. I add a drop of peppermint or eucalyptus, but not too much. I will try lemongrass also. .And this seems to have helped somewhat although I do find it frustrating not to really understand what the problem is. That is why I find Connect so helpful. Just knowing these symptoms are not unusual helps a lot.

@sjv1968 hi there! Thank you for your response. I’m still experiencing these symptoms unfortunately I just feel very strange ever since my 2nd vaccination for covid. I’m hardly producing any Mucus in my nose like barely any and it’s always white. Everytime I do a nasal irrigation I have horrible burning that goes all the way to my head, so I hardly do them. I’ve been dealing with some facial pain also by my nose bridge and four head as well as the lower base of skull it’s like tightness and if I’m ever standing or walking it feels pressured. This tend to happen when I lay down also. I’m stating to think perhaps I have atrophic inferior turbinates because they only seem to shrink and unshrink but I don’t feel so much volume or if they’re humidifyng the air cold/warm air keeping it moist, because then I would have mucus in my nose if that were the case right?

Please let me know if you’ve gotten better, these symptoms have started with me too. Cold air through my left nostril and it goes in my mouth, making my mouth cold. It is so uncomfortable and it seems i don’t have the little “bump” inside my left nostril that i do my right. My doctor doesn’t know what it is but nothing i do seems to help. Please let me know what to do

Welcome @lianam02, You mentioned that your doctor doesn't know what it is. Have you thought about getting an appointment or having your doctor provide a referral for you to an ear, nose and throat specialist?
