Too much cold air entering the nostrils

Posted by learningstudent @learningstudent, Apr 16, 2020

Well...Recently I have developed a weird symptom. I think I have had it for a month. My nose has no mucus, booger and when I inhale, I feel like there is too much air entering my nostrils so I have to use something to block part of it. Otherwise I feel so uncomfortable and suffocated. My right nostril is getting worse, there is no congestion or anything and sometimes my face or nose seems to lose sensation. When the turbinates work normally, they will shrink and swell up and provide warm air but this does not happen to my nose. All the air I breathe in is cold and is not warm at all. I am just wondering what causes it because for people who have atrophic sinusitis, they will have nose blockage. But I do not, I feel my nose is so empty and too much air entering them when inhaling even my nose is not dried. I hope somebody could help.

I have checked my nose, I do not see any turbinates, only hair and the holes of my nose. I have never done any turbinate reduction or nasal surgery.

I have had the same problem since childhood (I am 26 now) and I live in a small town of a third world country where doctors Just do not listen to me at all as all my tests come out normal. I apply Vaseline and then use a dry cloth beneath the mask. Before covid, I used to hold the cloth with my hands wherever I went. Now that masks are slowly going away, I do not now how will I be able to breath especially at my air conditioned workplace.

Welcome @floss, You mentioned you have the same problem since childhood. Do you mean cold air entering the nostrils?

Have you discussed your symptoms with your doctor? Did they suggest any treatments?

I have also condition bit similar ... i have dns since i was 16 yrs old nd now i just feel it has progressed .. during my 21-22 yrs i started having cold allergy not specific to season but even due to air conditioners ... my ent specialist treated it and it didn’t reappear until now after 3 years with much worse symptoms ... though i cant differentiate if its allergy or what but it has greatly affects my life ... my right nostril is quite blocked nd i cant breath much from it left is fine ... but lately my nose has started becoming excessively cold both outside and inside . Though inside is a disaster ... i feel so much of cold air going through my nose that i cant tolerate ... i cant even sleep without covering my entire face with blanket making my breathing condition worse ....
due to my job routine i have to sleep early but due to this i cant even sleep until its dawn temperature kind of seems to get down... leaving me all tired irritated and lazy the entire day ...
Also at times what i have to do to counter this is go to another room nd lay down with no fans or acs in complete warmth to be able to breath ... 😖😖😖
Im just tired of it no one around me believes my condition they say your making it up ... and hence no seeing doctors for useless reasons
Please someone just tell me how can i deal with all this .. just hearing s diagnosis would be great too ... treatment would be no less than a miracle

Hi melisgonza616,
I used to have lots of issues with my sinuses and it sounds like you have a lot of inflammation yet. Have you tried any prednisone and possibly a water soluble salve called Muciprocin? My ENT had me put it in my saline sinus rinse bottle. It helped me along with prednisone. Also there are 2 types of Flonase. One with a green cap and one with the blue. The green capped one contains fluticasone propionate while Flonase Sensimist (blue) contains fluticasone furoate. I prefer the Sensimist since it seems to be less drying and doesn’t cause me headaches. I also like Ayr, which is just plain saline spray which really soothes and moisturizers my sinus tissues. I carry that in my purse during the winter. Hopefully you get some relief soon!

Muciprocin is an antibiotic ointment to rid your nose of bacteria that my infected your nasal passage. I had an ENT take a culture of my nose and she found some sort of bad bacteria in it and she prescribed Muciprocin. It did get rid of the bacteria but it did not help my nose issues which are somewhat like @learningstudent's.

I have a similar issue. It is very hard to live with. I would try wearing a mask to sleep instead of the blanket because a mask will stay in place, but a blanket won't. My left nostril is blocked mostly, instead of the right. I do a lot of mouth breathing when I sleep because not enough air coming in nose and the mask also helps to moisturize the mouth with humid air.

I have had ENTs who have done CTscans and MRIs and examined me. I did have a septoplasty 20 years ago that did not help. Recently I have had 2 ENTs say they don't see anything to do surgically. Then I have another ENT say I need a Vivaer procedure, that my nasal valves are not working right. Then another ENT says I need a turbinate reduction, not a Vivaer procedure, he says the Vivaer would not work on my condition. Then another ENT who says not to have either procedure and sends me to a neurologist for pain issues I have in the nose and the neurologist wants to put a wire in my head to send pulses to the nose lining to deaden the pain.

Oh my goodness thats nothing worse than not getting a clear diagnosis for your problem ... i can honestly feel what you are going through wholeheartedly ....😞😞
Well mask is a great idea which mask do you use ? Do you ever feel suffocated or out of breathe in it ... as i do alot with blanket...
2. Why you got septoplasty ? Like you had dns ? If so did you felt these symptoms before getting the surgery or after ?

It is very frustrating process with these ENTs for me.
1. Yes, I can feel suffocated and out of breath using a mask. I have been using those blue disposable surgical masks with the elastic earloops for years. I would double up on them also to make it even thicker. For me, the heat and humidity of the mask is what I am looking for as it makes breathing a little easier, the heat and humidity seems to open the nasal airway, the turbinates will shrink a little with the humidity. It is only a solution to get through the day or night.
2. I had symptoms before the septoplasty. I had a deviated septum so that is what an ENT thought I should get the surgery for. He thought the deviated septum was causing the breathing symptoms and pain. It was not successful, it did not help my breathing. It did not seem to alter my breathing or pain significantly from prior to the surgery.
