Low Back Pain Going into Hip and Leg

Posted by donaldjames1 @donaldjames1, Dec 8, 2020

I have had 5 surgeries/fusions on my back and neck. I have not been able to get out of pain. I have lower right back pain, goes into my hip and into right leg. They think it might be my hip now, but doctor took and xray of hip a d they looked fine, he said. So I am in a position where I'm on pain meds and dont know who to see that can help me. I need help be a use of the pain when I get up. I also have pain in between shoulder blades which is secondary to my right lower back. I have had MRI done and they do not see what it may be... I'm just tired of being in pain with no life. I know God sent me to this site to find out options. Can someone help?

@loribroda Right, it is interesting. You're welcome. Good luck with your PCP and developing an action plan.

How are you managing your symptoms presently? Do you have a morning stretch routine?

I am just basically managing them, and since this is a busy season, I’ve been doing a lot of baking and running around. I take naproxen and Tylenol for the pain. And I rest when I need to. I did send a message to my PCP to see if he can get me in to some kind of rehab or something for the pain. I will keep you updated thank you for your concern. And you have a very merry Christmas

It's hard to change and find new ways to do things and to be patient with myself is the hardest part. So much to do, so many ideas, and the way I used to do things just is too painful now. Asking others for help seems like admitting I'm weak and imposing on their time, So, I just break it down into small lighter steps. Takes two to ten times longer to get done and hopefully it's not too late, still I keep trying.

I really get that!
For example, I used to get up at 6 am to mix cookie dough for Christmas baking, bake and decorate all day, and be cleaning up the kitchen at 8 or 9 pm. There would be 100 dozen cookies ready to share and to eat.
Now it takes 3 days, working a few hours at a time, to produce far fewer cookies.

Since I am 80, I seem to have "everything" wrong. Just kidding. My hip was hurting so much for about 4 months and doctors kept guessing as to the cause. Finally after many starts and stops of treatment, one doctor said he thinks it is sacroiliitis, and he gave me an injection of some steroid right into the sacroiliac. Pain is gone, at least for the present.

I’m fused S1-T4, C4-5-6. I also have serious left hip pain, down the side and inside of my thigh and into the outside of my calf. There is no stretch or change of position that changes the pain. I take Celebrex daily and ketorolac for breakthrough pain. It prevents me from walking far and is my most serious issue right now. So I understand your pain completely. My pain doc has ordered an MRI to look at the lumbar area where I have severe stenosis. If he can get through the fusions and the arthritis he can inject the area and maybe get some relief. That’s my plan for now. I avoid opiate drugs like the plague. They don’t work, addict you and make you worse. You can develop mindfulness and actually think your way out of a lot of pain. I do it everyday. Maybe look into that also?

Unfortunately steroid injections make you more susceptible to bone destruction and the more you have the worse it gets. Good luck

-itis is inflammation and it may come back. Get images and then a referral to PT. There are great exercises to relieve the hip pain, which is worse when that muscle, hamstrings and when there is loss of strength. Check out Piriformis Syndrome: Dr Jo and Bob & Brad on youtube have good stretches; webmd is good for understanding.

I was diagnosed around 8 years ago. I have tried every thing. Hooked up with pain mangement and have gone thru so so many different medications, shots, massage therapy. There are days that are almost pain free...butt the ones where i can take the meds prescribed to me, that nothing helps. I cry and laugh, that doesn't work either. I think that if you can find the right combination of medicines that will probably help for a while. What did your doctor say would eventually hhappen to us who have this disease?

Only one thing that has ever worked for me. My Neuropathy went over the Moon in 2018, but I was unaware of what was wrong! I was in the Hospital 4 times trying to have my pain diagnosed with ZERO results! Finally, my hand Doctor got me in the right direction with the proper Doctor and I now take CBD every day. I have pain, but I can handle it most of the time. I am so grateful that PA has accepted Medical Cannabis. Best wishes!

I know how you feel. It's so frustrating not being able to accomplish all that you want to do. God bless you!
