About to start Prolia: What's your experience?

Posted by Jefesitachica @npolanco, Feb 3, 2021

Dr wants for me to start Prolia. I have been researching. Would like to know if anyone in this group is taking. Worry about side effects.

I can relate. I have a molar requiring extraction followed by an implant. Saw oral surgeon last month. Both oral surgeon and endocrinologist say must wait until month six of Prolia injection which is January as I got my injection at end of July. Hope this tooth hangs in. General dentist cleaned out infection and what remains of tooth has temporary crown. Hope the tooth hangs in until Jan., hope once its extracted that the bone heals properly, hope I am not one of those victims who gets Prolia-caused osteonecrosis of the jaw. Endocrinologist says this time can wait 7 months for next injection. These osteoporosis drugs! Wonder about the risk/benefit ratio.

I am thinking that I won't continue with Prolia as I haven't seen much improvement with any bone building medications. I do eat good things and exercise. I haven't had the stomach problems, This tooth has already had a root canal but the roots weren't completely taken out. I don't see the sense in trying to save the tooth when there isn't that much of the tooth there and the endodontist doesn't give me good vibes about saving the tooth.

@ams I have been down that road of old failing root canals and I chose to have the teeth extracted and I got Zirconium implants and Zirconium replacement teeth so it is all ceramic and no metal in my body. As a bonus after the bad teeth were removed, my asthma improved greatly because my immune system wasn't dealing with toxic cadmium from the gutta percha in the root canal and the infection from the tooth that never clears up. I am glad I did not get titanium implants. They are not pure and have other metals in them and some people are allergic which is a problem after the jaw bone heals around an implant. I did have to live with titanium plates on my ankle bone after a fracture and it caused pain, heat in the joint and chronic hives. I had that removed and am back to normal now. When root canals fail, it sends all the stuff in the tooth into the jaw bone. That happened to me and it ate a hole in the bone. At first I saved the tooth and the oral surgeon cleaned out the infection in the bone and cut off the tip of the root and repacked the tooth. Then a couple years later, the tooth next to that went bad, and since I had 4 root canal teeth in a row, I replaced all of them with implants and a bridge. They were not worth saving, and my health improved dramatically after they were removed. Implants and replacement teeth are very expensive... about $5000 a tooth so be prepared for a shock when you inquire about that. All of this was a result of an accident and breaking my teeth as a kid, and all the dental work over the years that failed and was replaced a few times. It is also a very long process of about a year or more to complete.

Thank you so much. The more information I receive helps me so much. I have had teeth problems in the past due to the amalgam that used to be put in the fillings. Then having fibro didn't help either and TMJ too. That is why I am so concerned with any major work being done on my jaw. I feel the same way about metals as I feel that is why I have had problems in the past. I really appreciate the information that you have passed along.

@ams You are welcome! I'm glad I could help. I had my silver amalgam fillings removed, but they had already caused an auto immune thyroid problem (Hashimotos) according to my functional medicine doctor. I have to take desiccated pig thyroid to replace what my thyroid doesn't do. Old silver fillings leach mercury vapor which is toxic. The antibody levels against my thyroid were off the charts, and after I had the fillings removed and replaced by a biological dentist with resin composites, the antibodies were a low level. Now it tests as borderline, but the damage has been done.

I have had that too and MFR helped and getting fascia moving will help release waste products that get stored there. You can search for an MFR therapist here. http://mfrtherapists.com/

There is good and bad in any medication. You have to do the research and decide what is best for you.

I decided to try Prolia a few years back… at the time they said no one had any side effects from it. That has changed now. Now there is an assortment of side effects.

I have had upper abdominal surgeries and have continued stomach & esophagus problems. One would think an injection would not cause a problem with the stomach. The injection which was in my arm caused my stomach to hurt much like a stomach ulcer. I did report it to my care team at Mayo Clinic. To help with the pain I added Mylanta to my meds for a couple or so so weeks.

I have the numbers from my bone scans and none of the treatments that I have had have significantly helped my numbers any. I just try to eat and exercise the best I can.

You know your body best so no matter what has happened to others it is up to you to decide for yourself.

@migizii. I would change medications if I was not getting any results and had impacting side effects.

Prolia injections. Good or bad.

There are risks when you decide to discontinue Prolia, and so far I have stayed on it. I am 83, and have been taking the shot every 6 months for the past 3 years. My bone scans have shown slight improvements, but I am wondering if some of the other changes in my health are the result of the Prolia. I have scoliosis, and it has grown more pronounced and is now labeled degenerative scoliosis. I also have degenerative disc disease and need to use a cane and, or a walker to get around. I exercise regularly several times a day just to be able to move! I had a root canal about 18 months ago, and it seemed to heal, but periodically I have swelling and pain around that tooth, and it wiggles when this is going on. Being vigilent when I floss helps, and using a water-flosser also helps.

After I received my second Prolia injection I have had severe joint, muscle and bone pain. Does anyone know how to relieve these side effects or reverse these symptoms?

Good afternoon @hip123 and welcome to Connect. Darn it....I am so sorry you are having undesirable side effects from your recent Prolia injection. I just had my second injection last week.

Before starting Prolia, I called the company and asked them these questions. The response was to seek ER help if necessary and urgent. If less than an emergency contact the clinician who gave you the injection.

Have your negative side effects dissipated?

May you be free and protected from inner and outer harm.

Thank you !!! I had my second injection on September 21,2021 and I am still experiencing pain in my joints, muscles and bones along with a sore area on my left lower abdomen. At times severe abdominal pain. Going to the ER is not an option at this time during COVID I am taking tylenol every six hours and topical ointments on sore. I get little relief My Dr. said she does not think this is because of Prolia. The timeline of symptoms certainly points to after my injection. I also cannot take steroids because it raises my blood pressure to 220/150. I choose Prolia because my doctor told me it had the least side effects. I feel trapped now. Keep praying that there is some way out of this situation. I am trying to be positive but the pain I have is, at times severe ! Anyone who has found something that is helpful please let me know. Thank you !!!!!!!!!
