About to start Prolia: What's your experience?

Posted by Jefesitachica @npolanco, Feb 3, 2021

Dr wants for me to start Prolia. I have been researching. Would like to know if anyone in this group is taking. Worry about side effects.

Was on Prolia for two years with positive results. Off for two years and then back on for two years. No improvement that time. Never had any side effects. Would certainly encourage you to try it. Have now "graduated" to Forteo with no side effects.

I’ve also been recommended to go on prolia and appreciate the comments offered here. I do know two people who’ve been on it for over a year with no side effects so that’s encouraging.

Do you have to take a vacation from prolia? Is that why you went off? Did you take prescription medicine while off during the two years off? Thanks so much!

REPLY

Yes you have to take a vacation from it. Did not take anything inbetween the two years

Thank you for the info. It was good to read a positive side from someone who has been through it. A lot of negative out there. I’ll add one more question Did your T score improve?

@npolanco @sasha41 @lberard Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

@npolanco You've already received support from your peers regarding Prolia.

Below I have linked another recent discussion where members like @laura1965 @sue225 @migizii have also discussed Prolia.

May I ask how long ago you were diagnosed with osteoporosis and if you've tried other treatments previously>

Diagnosed w osteoporosis at age 50 (I’m 72now). Took fosamax for 15 years and became osteopenic but now osteoporosis is returned. My endocrinologist feels I’ve maximized benefits of fosamax and that category of drug and recommended prolia. I haven’t taken prescription meds for 7 years. I’m active and have never broken a bone. I do have a couple of risk factors: thalassemia and my mother had several hip fractures in her lifetime starting at age 50.

I am 76 years old with severe osteoporosis. I have tried two different injection treatments. Evenity is a once a month injection at the doctor's office and I recommend it for fewer side effects. I also tried self injecting Tymlos once a day but found after a week that I didn't like the side effects. Most side effects are severe fatigue and achiness. Both of these are newer drugs. I like not having to go to the doctor for injections, but overall the Evenity seemed to have less negative affects on me. Also, in the 5 months I was on the Evenity before I had a follow-up bone density scan there was significant improvement in my spine bone density. Hip numbers were not as good and I attribute that to the fact that I was not exercising. You have to be sure to get 1200 mg of calcium daily and 4000 mg D3 as well. I didn't want to take all that calcium in supplements so I was eating a lot of yogurt and milk. But then I changed doctors and the new doctor, a rheumatologist recommended Citracal slow release. Two of those capsules gives 1000 mg D3 and 1200 mg calcium. That is much easier.
I recommend that you see a rheumatologist if you have not already.
