Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@loribmt

The picture you painted for us of the string of kindergarten kids hanging onto a rope had me bust out in laughter, Laurie. But I agree with Ginger, maybe take one friend along?? And no slipping past the front desk!! Yikes, with ‘the brakes’ being put on Sue’s uncle’s walker, you don’t want your privileges taken away like that. Hahah though I know you wouldn’t get mad, you’d get even. Snicker.

@loribmt and
@gingerw. Thanks very much for your concern, threats, and warnings, girlies. Never fear. I've contacted my Care Manager/nurse, who knows me and my limitations coupled with my fearless warrior attitude, and she's given permission for my three requests of today:
. Outdoor daily walk with escort (IF someone is available);
. Daily shower WITHOUT standby care aid;
. Unescorted walk to the dining room with my walker (complete with keys 🤣 !)
Yaay! Freedom is getting much closer. Now if I can just dodge the walker escort,....just kidding.
All kidding aside, I truly do appreciate your care and concern, Ginger and Lori. Bless your hearts 💕 ! Laurie

I did my half-mile walk again today!! Kept a reasonable pace the entire time, didn't have to stop to catch my breath. It was a balmy 48 degrees when I went, and we expect a storm in later tonight...

@loribmt. Hahaha.
La la la....🎶 🎵 🤣 .
My late youngest sister always said that I was the wind beneath her wings. It was always a chore to live up to that!!
I sure miss her.

Baby steps! I got in a half mile walk, did a load of laundry, and got a nice dinner in the oven today. Of course, it feels like I worked 8 hours. This surgery nonsense has to stop.

@sueinmn, @loribmt, @artscaping, and all...I think that's definitely a full day's work and more...did you prepare all the dinner? You've got me beat, lady. I could do a couple of blocks with my walker, but laundry is really tough for me, the lifting and heavy wet things, etc. It's a 2-3 day job, 1 load. pitiful. Oh, well, I'll just wear the same things over and over? nope, but cooking-I love the Publix deli and prepared healthy meals. I put them in the oven for 30-40 minutes.
Hey, I just got Grammarly activated on my Windows 10. Didn't know about it, but it's like 'spell ck' and not so bad. Helps me, remember, we had a conversation a few months ago about spelling, etc.? Fixes punctuation, sp., grammar...love it!
sue, you are doing so well so give yourself a break. Relax and let your body heal, my friend. One tiny step. I prefer not to consider its patience, as I'm not very, but Lori is right. So, I'm missing a virtue. Join me as my virtueless friend.
Love and blessings, and good, healthy days. elizabeth

Hi Chris -
I am determined not to need another ortho surgery, but my knees are loudly proclaiming otherwise! Now I am working on my balance and leg strength to put is off as long as I can. (I'm way behind you at only 11 so far.)

I personally am partial to the "tightrope" CMC repair. I have had 2 very successfully, by different hand surgeons,and have active use of both thumbs. My friend is an avid painter, and her tightrope and mine were done about the same time - she also is delighted with hers - we are both able to pursue our passions. We found our initial recovery was about 6 weeks faster than another friend who had the anchovy - she was still in a cast when we started PT - and total recovery was almost 6 months faster.

The thumbs were just x-rayed by my new hand doc, and she proclaimed them "perfect." Unfortunately she couldn't say the same about my wrist - I now have a lovely new black splint to support it (10 years after it was altered.)

I'm not that great a model - have been waited on a lot this past week - but I am determined to head for Texas, so being careful.

@sueinmn, and all...I wish I'd gotten the help I needed earlier before the Mayo doc just looked at my hands/wrists and gave me some daytime hand/thumb braces and nighttime hard hand/wrist braces. They do help relieve some pain, but I have almost no use of my right thumb, limited use of left, and limited use of hands....haven't opened jars w/o some kind of help for years. When I get a bottle of water or tea at Mayo or whatever, I ask for help. Everyone is so good to help but I hate it. Hands are hurting now since I've written a couple of notes. Worth it! to chat a bit...love you all and send you handsful of blessings. Elizabeth
