When you mention nerve damage, is it in the newly replaced hip, or the older one? It is normal for the nerves to be upset and angry after a hip replacement, in my 5 surgeries, it ranged from very mild to extremely challenging. Nerves heal and/or regenerate very slowly and that healing does not even begin until at least a month after surgery. My most painful nerve took over 6 months to heal completely.
Having 2 major surgeries in 6 months is a lot for one body. When I did it, my life was basically focused on therapy, ice, rest, healthy diet with lots of protein for rebuilding, therapy, ice and walking. I had PT with focus on walking correctly (gait training) and strengthening. I had limped for many years when my hips were bad, and this got me moving correctly and got rid of long term back pain.

I had a hip replacement surgery August 23, 2021.I was doing really well the first three weeks and then woke up one day with sharp pains so I can’t just use a cane anymore. I called my doctor and they explained that it could be just change is causing the pain and I said I was doing so well but they don’t seem to have an explanation. Has anyone else experienced this
Hi sorry to hear your recovery hasn’t been easy. My husband experienced very similar issues. He compared it to spasms/extreme cramps and for someone who has a very high pain threshold, the experience was the worst. Try and change your diet to include lots of protein. Use ice to help with the pain and try some tonic water. These have helped him and doesn’t experience them as much now. Hope these pass soon.
11 months ago I had a left hip replacement with a full femur break. I am now getting pain radiating to the hip radiating to my knee, sharp pains, when you stand a certain way, and I'm afraid to fall again. What can I do?

Hello @mjmook47 Did you have a total hip replacement after breaking your femur? Or was the femur fractured during surgery and then repaired? I’m trying to understand your situation. I had a total hip replacement two years ago. I had weakness in that hip but not the pain you describe. Have you talked with your doctor about the pain? Is this pain new?

An idea if the pain persists and the doc hasn't already recommended this procedure. But it can take a long time for the femur to adjust.

My friend also had pain because too large a stem implant was used. Ultimately it did cause fracture.
My surgeon actually used pediatric implants on me. Fortunately I had surgery in a hospial that did a lot of peds ortho surgeries. The images last summer showed stems and cups are still sound after 15 years.
Well I was just advised that the sharp pain is due to subsidence of the appliance, which basically means it is falling into the femoral stem, both shortening my leg and generating the stabbing pain chronically. The top of Accolade hip is wedge-shaped which is supposed to not allow this descent, but in this case, the wedge is forcing the top of the femoral remnant apart and may lead to catastrophic splitting. So, the solution is yank it out and replace with larger appliance, both to stop the descent and to restore correct leg length. Not the news I hoped for but I had my suspicions. No amount of PT or back stretches or spinal injections or any of that makes any difference. Gravity is winning.
I don't like the sounds of what needs to be done for this! I feel for you! I had a bi-polar replacement done after fracture in the hip resulting from a femur fracture repair. I wasn't able to walk well after & it was uncomfortable so it was replaced with a full appliance(should have been done in the first place). This was done last January. Still not walking without a cane, they say some of the sutures came away from the muscle from the first replacement,so that may be the mobility problem. However, the past few weeks it got quite sore when walking, I thought it was just the weather being cold, but over the past few days, depending on how I bend or turn, I get a very sharp pain. The kind of pain that makes you yell. Am thinking I need to go see what is up because this does not seem normal. Does your problem show up in an xray? Splitting would certainly not be a good thing! All together there have been 5 surgeries, so I really hope my issue isn't the same as yours, I don't think I can handle a 6th!

thanks for this information. I'm going to ask my surgeon about this. I just started getting sharp pain depending on how I bend/turn. I'm 67 & there have been 5 surgeries on this site so small fractures could very well be a problem
I had a total hip replacement 6 months ago. I am having so much pain in the middle of my thigh. I can barely walk. And my doctor acts like I'm crazy! Thought about going to another surgeon... Please Help!!!

Hello @mjmook47 Did you have a total hip replacement after breaking your femur? Or was the femur fractured during surgery and then repaired? I’m trying to understand your situation. I had a total hip replacement two years ago. I had weakness in that hip but not the pain you describe. Have you talked with your doctor about the pain? Is this pain new?
