7% saline continues to deliver.

Here I am, again singing the praises of 7% saline solution, the introduction of which into my daily lung treatment, correlates convincingly with the disappearance of predictable twice yearly episodes of acute (febrile) bronchitis requiring antibiotic treatment; nineteen months now without a flare up. My apologies to any English teachers on the forum; can’t seem to learn when to end a sentence. Don

Really great to hear these stories. I changed from 3% to 7% last year and no problem tolerating it. After the latest round of Tobi treatments early this month I set up my nebulizer with 7%. It was like I had dropped a bomb into my throat. Yikes. Just could not tolerate it. Went back to 3%--no problem. Hoping I will be able to get back to 7% at some point. Even though I contracted Pseudomonas I feel 7% is better. My repeat pseudomonas is, most likely, never completely eradicated (just surpressed) so it will grow back again. Praying for us all.

Fdixon- did you try rinsing your mouth and gargling after nebulizing? I found that rinsing my mouth and gargling really helped with a dry mouth and sore throat after nebulizing. I think I read about it on this forum.

Related to that, I have read that nebulizing with 7% is hard on tooth enamel and rinsing your mouth with water or a mouthwash such as Biotene is really helpful. Has anyone heard about that side effect of the 7% saline?

Hi -
I found Tobi to be immensely irritating to my throat. It was before my 7% days, but for a few weeks afterward, even cold air or drinks above lukewarm were intolerable. This healed after a couple months. Right now, allergies are making my throat miserable, so I had to drop to 3% saline - I'll ramp up by mixing 7% and 3% half and half for a few days before I jump back to full 7%.

Hi Kathy. I did gargle when nebbing Tobi but backed off after treatments over. Thanks for the info.

That sounds mighty rough. “An ammonia-soaked Brillo pad dropped down my throat.” That’s how I’d characterize my first encounter with 7% saline.

I am grateful for 7%…I am presently off the cocktail of 3 drugs…and nebulizing 7% daily in place. At NJH to try to induce a sputum sample (which was unsuccessful after 5 days) the respiratory therapist used 10% (in the booth)…the exercise was physically draining and depressing (no sputum). After several bad drug reactions…the saline is a good alternative for me. My throat seems to tolerate…although it does cause me to choke at some point…I control that by slowing down on my exhale, holding breath a few seconds (Aerobika), and using the setting that is “not continuous flow” (as therapist taught me. On the Aerobika it appears as a triangle with little bumps…that cuts down on the continuous assault of saline and choking. Also lots of ginger tea and throat coat tea..plus almost drinking 6 pints of water (plus teas) daily.
I hope to have the success others have had😎and remain flare free from infections and meds.
All stay strong and healthy.

New to this forum & need to ask what Tobi is.

Has anyone tried nebulizing with glutathione? In addition to saline? My naturopath recommended it to me. My respirologist would not comment on it but said to continue nebulizing with 7% twice a day if I decide to try it.
Does anyone have any experience with this and, if so, was it helpful?

I see there are some older conversations here about glutathione, which I should have read before posting this question. However, I’m still interesting in any other comments/suggestions if there are any out there.
Thanks,
