Looking for other experiences with Aricept.

Posted by DanL @tunared, Apr 3, 2021

My wife is ending her 2nd month on Aricept (1 month on 5mm and 1 month on 10mm) and wants to stop it because of the (bad) dreams and hallucinations she has experienced. She has never had these problems before Aricept. Anyone else have bad experiences with Aricept? It does not appear to slow down her MCI decline. We meet with her Neurologist next week and will be discussing the problems with him. We are just interested in anyone else who experienced problems and did they continue with the drug or did they stop it.
We will also be asking the neurologist about the current study at the Geisel school (Dartmouth medical school) and the effectiveness of L-Serine.
All comments would be appreciated.

After my wife stopped Aricept, her neurologist put her on galantamine. It’s been almost a month and she has blurry vision, confusion and drowsiness but really no noticeable change in her MCI. She wants to stop the galantamine because of the side effects. Anyone else have experience with galantamine? It’s her decision and I kind of agree with her.

I wonder if @bczachery @debbraw @joancampy @jal333 have experience with galantamine.
Dan, while we wait for others to chime in, I think you might appreciate this expert interview on the MCI blog.

Hi Dan @tunared - Sorry, I can't help on this. No experience at all with galantamine. Having said that, I agree that the decision is hers and the side effects don't sound worth it. Good luck with getting more information!

an update, my wife has decided to stop the galantatime. she has been off it for about 5 days now. Not sure how long it will take to leave her system but some of the side effects have lessened (confusion, etc). However, now she is being treated for something called Pseudoexfoliative, which causes blurry vision and requires eye drops a few times a day. it causes excessive eye pressure and can lead to more serious vision problems. Md's do not think, Pseudoexfoliative is caused by MCI but cannot provide a definitive answer. She can't remember the eye drops so it's something I have to keep track of but that's ok. MCI is just an amazing condition and I have not met anyone who can say anything definitive about the condition, except for: If you have seen many examples of MCI, you still have only seen ONE example.
Thanks everyone, for being there and trying to help.

I am not familiar with galantamine. My partner has taken a a few meds for his MCI and currently is on memantine. He has issues with excess salivation. One day, one drug at a time in a search for help.

My husband has issues with excessive salivation on donepezil. Unsure if taking it is helping or not at this point.

Hello: I am a LBD with Parkinsonism patient. I have had drooling problems for quit sometime. I also take donepezil. We arent sure if it is the donezepil contributing to it or just a natural progression of the diseases.
My neurologist did tell me if the dose is too high (no more than 10mg/day) there could be some worsening or the drooling.

How long has your husband been on donezepil?
For me it took a couple of weeks to feel results.

I’m curious to hear what the neurologist says as I also have similiar problems. Always good to know others experiences.

Peace
Larry H.

My husband started Aricept 5mg about one month ago. So far, no side effects and MCI seems quite improved. He takes it at night and is more alert and engaged in the morning. He may go up to 10mg after his next appointment with the PA at the Neurologist’s practice.
