Food as Medicine to Address and Overcome Mood Disorders

Posted by nla4625 @nla4625, Feb 14, 2021

I've gotten really interested in the topic Food as Medicine, which includes research going on connecting depression, anxiety, brain fog and other mood disorders with an unhealthy gut. You can find information about this on gutbrainseries.com. The people who run this website are sponsoring 9 free seminars with 30 experts running from 2/15/21-2/23/21 beginning at 8pm to show how to overcome mental challenges like depression, anxiety, brain fog and other mood disorders by using proven strategies to heal your gut. In addition, they gave away 2 free e-books (Top 10 Foods To Eat to Avoid Anxiety and What Leaky Gut Does to Your Brain). Hopefully, since this starts tomorrow, these resources will be available on their website after 2/23/2021. I am not an expert on this and have no desire to be challenged or debate the issue with anyone. I'm just presenting information that has helped me. Since I've been on an intermittent fast, eliminated sugar, refined carbohydrates, and processed food from my diet, and started taking a really good probiotic, I feel 100 times better and haven't had to use my light box as much to deal with my SAD. It is clear to me there is a direct correlation between my diet, my gut and my mood. As further evidence, I had 2 years of debilitating headaches after my brain surgery at Mayo where I couldn't work or do anything but try to avoid headaches. Heavy duty prescription drugs weren't helping. At my yearly checkup, the neurologist said I shouldn't still be having headaches related to this surgery. He didn't ask me what I was eating or drinking, and I hope today that has changed. I pretty much identified my headache triggers by keeping a detailed journal of what I ate and drank and tracked my headaches against that...nonorganic chicken pumped full of hormones and antibiotics, chocolate, red wine, nitrates, ice cream, cheese, etc. I spent a lot of time researching headaches, and THE main culprit for me was aspartame. I read about how it affects brain chemistry. I quit using a packet of Equal in my coffee in the morning and stopped drinking a can of diet pop in the afternoon. That was all it took. My headaches stopped. Aspartame destroyed two years of my life. I still suffer from periodic headaches, but usually they are caused by barometric pressure weather changes or celebrating with one of my food triggers. I hope doctors and scientists will continue to do research in this area and you will look into this if you think it might help you. Nancy

Hi, thanks for the reply. My mood positive change on green keto (Anna cabeca) lasted 1 month. Didn’t know if it was a photoshop of how is a brain on ketosis but that’s my goal: trying to get into ketosis and stay on it for better brain function. Would like to know women (be I think is different for men) that are trying this and how are they doing. Ill checked Dr Boz approach and find it excellent bc of supported on data, bio markers, measures and not just guessing, but still find that it doesn’t adress intolerances, the gut-mind connection, the women hormonal changes, the need to be alkaline. Keto was started as a protocol for epilepsy why couldn’t it be beneficial for mood disorders and inflammation? Is somebody giving it a try?

Hi @lorena1egas, You will see that I moved your comment to the discussion that is talking about food diets that help with depression and mood disorders. I see that you posted previously here as well. When you respond to a discussion that was already started, the group settings move it to the top of the list so all the members can see that there is a new comment on this topic.

Can you share with me what you are referring to when you say "a photoshop of the brain on ketosis"? I have often wondered about this diet myself and would love to know how exactly it has benefitted your mood and stability. 🙂

Colleen, Have you heard of " Internal anxiety - that's not caused by physical circumstances- but from muscles spasms. Its something I've been working with my Parkinson's doctor every couple months-as it increases at times when I try to sleep. I'm told its part of the movement disorder many Parkinson's patience's faces- along with the Parkinson's side affects and the constant ( body moving 24/7). I hope I explained this right- I see my Doctor again next week- he teaches once a month on line- and where anyone can ask questions. Thank you. John South

Hi @johnjames

I just now noticed your post about internal anxiety. Yes, I have heard of it as well! I've been part of Parkinson's support groups where many folks have talked about his internal shakiness. Often, their doctors have attributed this symptom to anxiety (not being aware that it is a symptom of PD) and given them anti-anxiety meds which have caused more problems. As many of us know, anti-anxiety drugs cause PD patients to have worse symptoms.

As Colleen, @colleenyoung mentioned I think this would be a great discussion topic for the Parkinson's discussion group. I hope you will offer your comments about it and share what you have learned about these internal spasms and what treatments have helped you.

You mentioned that your doctor teaches/speaks online. Is it possible to give us the website where we can find this information or is this just for his own patients?

@johnjames I'm so sorry to hear of your many bouts with pneumonia. Do the doctors understand why this is happening? I'm wondering if it is a result of poor swallowing and aspiration?

Thank you so much for the added information about the classes you have been taking. This might be very helpful to others.

Stay well and be safe. Will you post again and let me know how you are doing?

Hi @amandaburnett I restarted this protocol that is base in changing your biochemistry. I decided to started a rigorous keto protocol call keto continuum by Dr. Boz. The method is from clinical practice and scientific - evidence based so there’s no way to get stucked or not reach te finall goal that is: to reverse chronic illnesses and a better endocrine and neurological outcome. I did all the modules and I am into the support group with others that are far away and more advanced. This is chemistry and I feel more focus. Still in the first phase so better to benefit from the more advanced and successful patients that has overcome many conditions and reduced their prescriptions by reversing the chemistry inside. You can join a fb support group we meet by zoom every Sunday night https://bozmd.com/

I know this is an old post but it makes my heart happy to read of someone who realizes that food is indeed medicine for the entire body, physical or psychological, something which I have been saying for years and years. The fact that you did your research to learn how to take charge of your health is noteworthy. We have to do the work because there is no magic pill.

Doctors have to allocate small pockets of time for their patients so there is rarely any mention of diet and if there is , it is brief. I don’t know if that will change but this routine prescription approach to our health plus all the problems with the food industry in our country is a hard combo to overcome. But you are doing it and I have been living the food is medicine life because I did the research also. I am a young 80 and I don’t take any prescription medicine.
Like you I don’t want to engage in a debate because I do realize that medication is essential and life saving for some.

Meds still work best with attention paid to diet and movement. So I do not feel they are exclusive to one another. Quality of Life is the goal.
