Heart catheterization wit kidney disease

My husband has stage 4 kidney disease and is having a heart cath. What should I expect?

@anet I'm sorry to hear your husband is in stage 4 kidney disease and is going to have a heart catheter.

May I ask how long your husband has been ill?

In 2016 he had an aortic aneurysm which was repaired by evar. He recovered well from that but that is when his kidney function started to decline. In 2018 he had a mild heart attack and heart cath. He has been seeing a nephrologist since then and is now having some heart problems requiring another cath. He is entering the hospital today for hydration of his kidneys and having the cath tomorrow. He has been doing well for the last two years. Even though his gfr has been low, his nephrologist says other factors are good and he feels well, plays golf, and our lives are pretty normal. I am just praying the dye does no damage his kidneys any further, but from what I read, it is possible...he is 76 years old.

@anet Sending hugs of support to you. I have found that doctors are very attuned to the issues with kidney disease stages and scans/procedures. They do not want to unnecessarily strain anything. They may be able to use a dye that will clear his kidneys easily, and I imagine they are in touch with your husband's nephrologist. For example, my oncologist consulted with the imaging center and my nephrologist last fall before MRIs. And next week, on another MRI, I will have no contrast because of my stage 4 kidney issue.

Thanks everyone. He came through fine. His gfr is actually better now than before the procedure. up to 29–almost 30! good for him. He had another blockage that required a stent. He was on Plavix before the surgery Is on Brilinta now which is causing some shortness of breath. Seeing doctor for follow up next week. Hope to get this solved. Otherwise seems ok.

My husband 76 is having triple bi pass next week and also has poor kidney functions but not as bad as stage 4. We were also worried from all the test he has had recently if the dye would damage the kidneys but all the cardiologist specialist have said; they would put in a special drip to help that and the advantages outweighed the negatives so trust your specialists. Wishing him the best.
