What causes Clicking or Popping in Throat when Swallowing?

Posted by mushroom @mushroom, Oct 2, 2020

I was doing some neck massages a few days ago and then afterwards whenever I swallow, I feel a clicking/popping sensation and sound when my larynx moves up upon swallow. There is no pain at the moment but the popping sensation in my throat gives me anxiety whenever I swallow. Is this the result of the cartilage rubbing on each other? Is it from the hyoid bone rubbing the thyroid cartilage? Are there exercises that can fix this?

@lucy1234 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

It sounds like you have had a lot of tests done but no one can figure out why you have an annoying clicking in your throat. You are obviously looking for answers, suggestions, and support.

Members like @mariakaragianni @lioness42 @highpsi8 @ipodclassic @mushroom @roseferns have recent experience discussing this topic and may be able to help.

Have you ever noticed times where the clicking is not happening, if so, what may have been different at that time?

Thank you. Sometimes if I put pressure on my throat with my fingers, I can't feel the clicking or if I lift my head the swallow, no clicking feeling. Weird

When you are trying to feel it don't press it, just touch it very soft and the click must be there. Mine is like this.

Hi... just noticed these comments when receiving emails of new messages... and I am wondering about something: I am having trouble with my ears, history of tinnitus; history of tmj; but last year or so pain and echo in ears , not infection, and mention has been made abut Eustation tube not sure of spelling, and I am wondering if some get the "cause" of the clicking happening, but are not "hearing " it but with we who have inner ear problems, we are "hearing" the clicking?
As an older person I have some hearing loss yet at the same time have hyperacousis, again not sure of spelling, and I can hear a pin drop on the floor a room away. Opposites. I have to keep asking my spouse to repeat what he says but if my hair gets between my pillow and my ear I can hear the hair moving..... and this is for many many things......now how do I explain this to an ENT? Is our hearing picking up noises that are happening to everyone but they dont hear it? Thanks, hope I am making my point .... hard to explain. J.

Also @lucy1234 it seems to go away when I eat or drink fluids but then it comes back shortly after. You?

Wow I am experiencing this after a ear infection and swollen tonsils..I think after spitting phlem and gargling salt water and a mix of peroxide I irritated my throat on force of spitting. I went to see my Dr he prescribed me some antibiotics in case of infection but I only had ear pain by then. I started doing some exercises to my neck nothing extreme just used a scarf as stretching tool and used a roller to roll against my back and gently rolled a small roller on my backside of my neck. I was stiff b/c I had a bad habit of stretching my jaw and neck to the right side to pop my ears with no luck and didn't realize I was putting pressure on my neck causing mis alignment..I'm able to breath and not feel the clunk noise when swallowing as much it definitely made a difference..I also lay down and hold my breath in and massage my stomach a area that helps with acid reflux and honestly it gave me some relief. I'm trying to just do exercises and stretching the shoulder and neck area and took a acid reflux pill Im definitely thinking it's gotta have something to do with back and neck adjustment or even just minor dislocation of neck bones maybe either way it did help me after doing the soft stretches and using a roller on my back neck it's weird. I don't do lymphatic massage as I think that also made it worse so ..so yea hopefully it continues to help I'd be happy if it goes away completely.

@highpsi8 @rockymountain1107 & @luvfitall Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

@highpsi8 Having tests and getting "normal" results is disheartening. COVID-29 has further complicated finding answers. When is your barium swallow test?

@luvfitall you mentioned a grinding sensation. When did you start to have this sensation?

@rockymountain1107 You have great information to give and I'm sure the community will find this help. Members like @lucy1234 @lupin @mariakaragianni @roseferns. @rockymountain1107 may be able to benefit from this information. May I ask if you came up with the exercises on your own or was it information you received elsewhere?

I had an anxiety attack and I read you should rub your left side of the throat. I did that n now I have a clicking in my throat. My cartilage moves around and I cany even eat. I have to reposition my neck to one side and then try and swallow. I feel really low and depressed. Will this go away. I read that thyroid cartilage deviation only go way with a surgery. I really cant deal with this. I'm so tired and stressed. I feel ok some times during the day. But I have started dreading dinner. I prefer to eat alone. Cos its embarrassing. I also am super depressed because of covid. I need a miracle. I need my old life back. I was so ungrateful Jesus but now I look for one miracle from you. Please help me someone if you have a doctor recommendation or if you know what is solution. I'm not being rude but please reply only if you have a valid solution or been healed from this thyroid cartilage deviation. Clicking of the hyoid.

@roseferns Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It must be hard to feel you must eat alone out of embarrassment.

@rockymountain1107 Just posted they she has been doing exercises that have been successful.

May I ask if you are feeling any better than you were when you posted this. Have you seen a doctor yet?

Hello I did notice that the neck massage and stretching my upper shoulder helps.. I'm going to see a chiropractor tomorrow to ask for a adjustment and see about my jaw as I noticed it's really tender and perhaps the cause of my ear pain..I did notice once I stretched my jaw in the direction of my pain my swallowing improved and the click to swallowing wasn't as loud. I don't know if my tmj pain would play a part in the click while swallowing but I did notice it improved with the minor neck stretching. After proper stretch i practiced bringing my lower jaw inward creating a overbite.. I did it slightly and not hard pressure I noticed my throat felt relief. I noticed my clicking started when I felt ear pain and feeling clogged so I had a bad habit of pushing my lower jaw to the right trying to force my ear to pop with no luck..so once I see my chiropractor hopefully it answers more questions of what I can do to improve this.

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect @mariakaragianni & @ipodclassic.

This is a place to give and get support. You said that you both have the same issue. May I ask if either of you have received a diagnosis yet?

Jump to this post

Hello @erikas ! Sorry for the late response, been super busy with work and surviving.
I haven't received a diagnosis because getting one is very difficult for me, I had a close relative (young and healthy) die in an endoscopy, so that left me quite traumatised regarding having an endoscopy. Also having moved to a new country several times during the pandemic, made it really hard for me to be able to follow proper treatment.
I managed to get an appt for a pysch consultation, and hopefully see a GI doctor ASAP. Maybe try to see my problem from a less invasive point of view.

@mushroom You swallow many times in a day. I'm sure that your condition must be extremely annoying. Going to a specialist (ENT) is going to be the best avenue in addressing your concern. May I ask what sorts of questions your previous provider asked you about your throat, during your appointment?

Jump to this post

@erikas I notice many posts are about a clicking sound when swallowing. I have the same thing and have seen both a dentist and an ENT specialist. I learned that I have a condition known as TMJ, which stands for Temporal Mandibular Joint. It's a fairly common condition but you should perhaps see your dentist about it, because it can lead to more serious problems. I was told it's often caused by grinding your teeth in sleep, or by jaw clenching. I'm a jaw clencher! My dentist had a mouth guard made for me, which helps a lot. I mostly wear it at night. My TMJ lead to me suffering a dislocated jaw, when I yawned. That led me to the dentist immediately, even though the dislocation slipped back in place right away. Very painful, and still is. I saw the ENT because of a fullness feeling in my ears, and he was quick to diagnose TMJ, since there was no ear infection, as I had assumed.
