Anyone else dealing with shingles?

Posted by oldkarl @oldkarl, Apr 20, 2020

I now have shingles. My inoculation this year did not work. In fact, I am worried that I was given something else, as my shingles started up about two months after the shot.

I had the original shot for shingles when I turned 60; however 10 years later I had the worse case of shingles my caregivers had ever seen. Acupuncture and Chinese ointments helped me recover. Now I have itching in one spot on my back and
Once in a while ongoing nerve pain.

Now I wonder if I should get the newer shot? Has anyone had two shots?

The first shingles vaccine (which I had about 10 years ago) is only 65% effective. The new one (believe that is Shingrex) is about 90 % effective. Keep meaning to get it. Right now because of Covid-19 getting my flu shot as soon as it is available next month is my #1 priority.

I got my flu shot about a week ago at CVS. We're being advised to get the shot earlier this year.

Flu shot vaccine is out now and we are advised to go ahead and get it early because of the covid. I did last week. Usually I wait until October.

Hi @sue225,

Similar to you, I had the first Shingles shot right after I turned 60. Last year I had the more effective Shringrex shot (actually 2 shots spaced a couple of months apart). I still ended up with Shingles this year, but I'm told it could have been worse had I not had the more effective vaccine.

Regarding the flu shot, I also got it last week. My doctor said if I got it in September I could get another one in January (I would just have to pay out of pocket for it) and that would take me through the flu season fairly effectively. I'm thinking of doing that.

Wonder why two are needed? Just confirmed with pharmacy here: flu vaccines not available 'til October.

I had the Shingrix vaccine November 2019 and had the weirdest symptoms for 4 months, and I should have done my research but didn't. I had to go to therapy as it affected my balance, my legs, then burning in my body, and wound up with Panic attacks that did not go away. One of my doctors listened to me and did his own research and finally decided I had a severe reaction to that vaccine, so I won't take another vaccine again. That is just my decision. I had shingles back in the 80's and they gave me no medicine, etc. When the original vaccine came out with the live vaccine I had not problems. The Shingrix was awful for me. Do your research and then decide if you want to try it.

My doctor told me that some people react to the Shingrex vaccine but your experience was not what she described. My dentist had the vaccine and he experience flu-like symptoms and just felt "under the weather" for a few days.
