Too much cold air entering the nostrils

Posted by learningstudent @learningstudent, Apr 16, 2020

Well...Recently I have developed a weird symptom. I think I have had it for a month. My nose has no mucus, booger and when I inhale, I feel like there is too much air entering my nostrils so I have to use something to block part of it. Otherwise I feel so uncomfortable and suffocated. My right nostril is getting worse, there is no congestion or anything and sometimes my face or nose seems to lose sensation. When the turbinates work normally, they will shrink and swell up and provide warm air but this does not happen to my nose. All the air I breathe in is cold and is not warm at all. I am just wondering what causes it because for people who have atrophic sinusitis, they will have nose blockage. But I do not, I feel my nose is so empty and too much air entering them when inhaling even my nose is not dried. I hope somebody could help.

I have checked my nose, I do not see any turbinates, only hair and the holes of my nose. I have never done any turbinate reduction or nasal surgery.

@learningstudent-I won’t go into details, as I am mainly here to help or provide insight for others anyway I can.
I will only say, I was in 100% perfect health, until I made a visit to an ENT (surgeon). Western Medicine is a huge money maker. Without patients making appts, there is no money to be made. If more patients were talked to or coached on overall health, fitness, wellness, most importantly stress levels, there would rarely be doctor visits. If an ENT is paid off of surgical procedures, it his his job to convince you to elect for surgery. So be very careful. As many doctors are trained in this and know, that if a patient is coming to see them, they are “worried” about something. They will “find” something to try and confirm your “worry”. But ask yourself, is my worry causing symptoms, or are my symptoms causing worry. Where your mind goes, the energy flows. It’s all interrelated.
We live in a fast paced, high anxiety driven society with technology changing everyday. Unfortunately that has spilled over into our health, with people wanting quick fixes and seeking a doctor to help them ASAP. It can cause more harm than good. The body is not a machine or technological device. Be patient and kind to your body and treat it with grace and respect. Learn/educate yourself on how to gain optimal health through proper nutrition(food is medicine), stress reduction, physical activity and social community. It’s all related when it comes to health.

Cuz a lot of doctors said it is always in our mind when they cannot diagnose what happens. I would say ens is very deliberating. Nobody knows how that feels until one has it. I know what mind and body means. But unfortunately this only happened to me after I took beta blocker atenolol. First dizziness and then breathing difficulty and then hyperventilation and then empty nose syndrome and I could feel my turbinates shrink but they shrink too much and besides the nose are not producing mucus anymore so dried and no boogers and the nostrils are open and empty.

I said mind body works which is related to psychological aspect. Psycho said try not to think of it but imagine if somebody sitting next to u keep punching u every sec, can u ignore that? Cuz it hurts. U could distract urself from it but the pain is still there and u could feels. It is only when one goes through the experience that one knows how it feels.

@learningstudent-I want you to know I very much believe you. I don’t think it’s “all in your head”. Dry/Cold air sensation is debilitating. Do you mind if I ask why you were prescribed a Beta Blocker? Was it off label for anxiety? I’m trying to help you see a connection. The trigeminal nerve is the most powerful nerve in the body. This nerve is often irritated/heightened in times of stress. This nerve is responsible for migraines, stress headaches and nasal irritation as it runs right through the nose. It is responsible for the sneeze reflex. When this nerve gets irritated/heightened it can start sending strong “danger” signals to the brain. This is your fight/flight response, hence anxiety. Your brain can them sense this feeling as danger. Your sensation is causing the distress for you. There are ways you can put the control back to make you feel calm. This is why I really urge against not going to Western Medicine doctors. If it’s something they can’t see, such as a “feeling”, “sensation” then you are told it’s all in your head, which makes the cycle worse. When we do go to a doctor appt, if you think about it, it is all based off of a “feeling”. They can only go off of our perception and description and hope it matches up to what they “see”.
If there is any peace of mind I can offer you, is to know that you did not have structural damage per se through a traumatic event. I highly recommend you work with a natural path or homeopathic doctor who can address everything going on. There was a reason you were prescribed a beta blocker, but was that reason ever addressed? Because if that was t addressed, your nervous system was already on high alert before the beta blocker, then the side effect of beta blocker, pushed the nerves over edge. I hope this makes sense. You do have the ability to overcome this from a whole body approach.

Not for anxiety but for higher rate and that was the first time that I had ever used it for a month only but stopped it cold turkey. The doc said he used it for high blood pressure himself but then he only used 25mg and he prescribed me 50mg. A few days after I used it it kinda changed my internal system and then I felt less alert and became a bit of sluggish.

I have also used a couple of supplements but is of no use and they do not seem to work. My issues are not just the nose but has similar symptoms to autonomous nervous system problem but after the tilt table test they said it was normal. But then now it still leaves me with a lot of problems. My cold hands and feet are obvious but the docs do not really care and only my pt acknowledges that and no cure but told me a way to cope with it.

I am not sure if naturopathic docs could really solve these weird problems.

Btw do u feel fluid when u press your head against something such as pillow. I used to have it which was normal to me and now it is gone so I have ens.

@learningstudent-high blood pressure effects so many things. And the nose being one of them. The vasculature through the nose is rich and hypersensitive to blood pressure, hence bloody noses. It’s also the reason why your nose runs sometimes (autonomic nervous system) some people are naturally more sensitive than others in this area. Hence allergies. With high blood pressure, comes headaches and tension. With headache, tension comes inflammation and blood restriction to areas that need it. If you are on high alert and hypertensive, your blood flow goes away from your feet and hands, because your body sends it to your organs first if senses you in danger.Headaches and tension, if not addressed can cause nervous system disorders. You have to address the high blood pressure to address the nervous system disorders. Do not discount a natural path/functional medicine doc. They can ask you questions that no one else would think to ask you. Once your nervous system is keyed up, every single sensation in your body, that would have been autonomic and in the background, becomes louder and you will then think you have a problem. When everything is operating in a relaxed, homeostatic state, things quiet down. Are you taking an honest look at your diet, exercise, job stress, what you do for fun? Your daily rituals. 90 percent of healthcare happens outside of the doctors office. Be thankful you only felt this after a month of a medication. There are ways you can cleanse the body as well to rid of medication side effects. Also, notice how you speak to yourself. Often when in an anxious state, you will talk black and white, all or nothing. Your sensations may not be that “weird”. Acknowledge your sensations, but don’t give in to them by catastrophizing and making them worse. I only know this verbiage, because a doctor used “catastrophic” verbiage to me. Once I heard it, I believed it to be true. After that my “symptoms” got worse. But they were not even bad to begin with.

@learningstudent-I forgot to add this to the above. Something that most people don’t/wouldn’t know, is that the tissue in the nose is the same as erectile tissue. For erectile tissue to function properly there needs to be the right beta-receptor activated. There is a reason why beta blockers cause ED (erectile dysfunction). The two tissues are the same. The doctor who prescribed you the beta blocker would not be thinking that, because again, they only look at one part of the body. In saying that, I would go back to, ask you when you had the appt for where the beta blocker was prescribed, were any questions asked about how YOU were feeling/doing as a whole. The body has a cause and effect. You don’t just “have hypertension” there were causes that led up to hypertension as an effect. Address the cause(s) and you will address the effect. A pill won’t take away hypertension, it will mask it, while causing other issues, as you’ve experienced. Again, be kind to your whole self, you are not separate parts.

I do not have hypertension but sometimes the blood pressure just elevated a bit - prehypertension. He said I had higher heart rate probably I have white coat syndrome and then I asked him why I had higher heart rate, is it something wrong with the heart since I also had pain in the middle of the rib at that time just right below the middle of chest bone. He immediately prescribed me antenolol and the that medicine changed the shit out of me. Right now I am feeling shit and it seems my system is out of whack. Mind and body shit does not work either. Primary doc told me to see a psychologist and said he or she could help with body and mind and But then the real shit was that he thought it was all in my mind and the psychologist thought it was anxiety disorder and she just asked me a bunch of shit questions, which were stupid and offered no help and like u said she told me try to know your body and mind. What the heck how do I know the body and mind, turning out that it was ignoring the feeling and pain and tried not to focus on it and before taking the medicine I did not have cold hands and feet and my nose was normal and I had a lot of snot and the nose always felt warm and I could felt the nasal nerve throbbing and right now everything seems to become the opposite of what they used to be.

I feel body and mind is bullshit to be honest, why not just told me to do yoga and meditate and that sounds better than what the shitty term body and mind thing.

@learningstudent-I am really sorry you have experienced this. It is a frustrating feeling. The doctor suggesting white coat syndrome was his way of telling you, you were probably just nervous. Doctors and ER doctors know that 80% of their patient visits for headache or chest pain, are stress/anxiety related visits. But no doctor is trained to write a prescription for time off work, rest, relaxation, or spending time in nature or doing something you enjoy.

-For the nose issues, you now have something new that you are focusing on. I would try the things people suggest to bring moisture back to the nose. Look into Ayurvedic medicine as they have ways to help restore moisture.
-Focus on what you can control. Total body.
-The people who you are seeing now for help, or asking advice for on here whom you are saying are offering no help. It’s not that they are offering no help. It’s help that does not come in the form of a pill. They are trying to help you address the distress.
-I would encourage you to find a practice you can believe in. You have to believe in something. Most importantly, yourself first.
Yoga/Meditation is actually all about reconnecting the brain/body. It truly is connected. But if you don’t believe in that, then it won’t help you.
-I understand your condition is frustrating. I wish you well in trying to improve and feel better.

Thank you, Juli. I have been having somewhat similar symptoms and have similar problems. I was told I had mid segment pain and prescribed amitriptilline 10mg. But the problem isn't really pain it is pressure over the bridge of my nose and nose "sensitivity". Often my nose would feel very cold. So I have stopped all nasal sprays, even saline spray, for a while, and started, like you, inhalation in the morning and nasal irrigation in the evening. I add a drop of peppermint or eucalyptus, but not too much. I will try lemongrass also. .And this seems to have helped somewhat although I do find it frustrating not to really understand what the problem is. That is why I find Connect so helpful. Just knowing these symptoms are not unusual helps a lot.

I just recently started to have this same problem. I did just get over covid and my main symptom during covid was a sinus infection. Now, it just feels cold when I breath. I've never had this problem before.

I've always had this problem to varying degrees. One thing I do when going out for our morning walks when it's cold is to just ball up some tissue paper and clog each nostril. When I'm indoors, if having the problem, I bump the house temperature up a degree and make sure the humidifier is working. Both temp and humidity affect me. Note, I'm not a medical professional. In your situation I would also talk to my doctor. Good luck to you!
