Hello
I'm hoping to share some humor during these stressful times and hope noone take offense.
I'm also hoping my attached cartoon comes across as I have not posted any attachments before.

I am getting tired of living... am I the only one?

@contentandwell, What you wrote is so true! While my s-i-l swears they didn't buy their new home because of the actual temp controlled wine cellar and I'm well satisfied with the Beringer White Zinfandel they keep on hand just for my visits, I know the feeling of "missing out" by gifting your 76 wines to others when you had to abstain.

It was somewhat the same for me when I discovered that I was highly allergic to wood smoke. It didn't take long to share my still-waiting-in-the wings cord of firewood after posting on my neighbor page that I had some free for the taking. I still yearn for the smell of the wood fires and yearn for the smells of pinon pine particularly.

From that experience I learned to not delay when finding a special plant because tomorrow it might not be available. Now I don't wait or save things for special occasions. Heck! At my age, I might not be around later so why not enjoy those wonderful finds right now???

@fiesty76 I have definitely learned to not put off the enjoyment of special things. I try to remind myself of that frequently. I had a sister-in-law who used her beautiful Waterford glasses daily for that reason - what's the point of having them if you can't enjoy them.

@imallears Perhaps it's just the taste of Pinot Grigio/Gris, it just does not do it for me and I have had some that are on the higher end of the price range. When my son was first dating his wife that was her favorite and I did buy her a few very good ones.
I agree, many pinot noirs are not good at all but when we were at a winery in CA, I think it was in Carneros, they had a small production Pinot Noir that we ended up scribing to for a case each year and it was very good. It was only available that way.

If you enjoy a sweet dessert wine, in my opinion, Takaji is the best, followed by one made by J winery that is only available at the tasting room in Sonoma.

This is making me miss wine a lot since I enjoyed the whole process and learning about wines almost as much as drinking it.

@nannette1941 I'm really sorry to hear that, Nannette. I hope it's just an isolated day feeling that way. I think we all have had our days of depression during this pandemic, particularly us seniors because we have to be so careful. Try to remember, things are getting better each day and if enough people do get vaccinated we will reach "herd immunity" sometime during the summer probably and then most people will be free to expand their activities.

Do you have family and/or friends whom you are missing? I sure do. My son wants to visit but it requires a flight so I have told him he needs to hold off for a while longer since he could be carrying and shed the virus. Being on immunosuppressants I am still vulnerable despite having been vaccinated. I never thought I would miss grocery shopping, but I do! We are all in this together so just hang tight and we get through this together too. 🤗

Hi,
If Pinot Grigio tasted like water than it was not a good brand. I have had watery pinots. There are many cheap watery blah sweet pinots out there. For a good Pinot Grigio or Gris you should be able to feel it on your tongue and it should have a decent amount of acidity. There...I have defended my favorite white wine. Although I don’t like sweet wines, I would try the Hungarian essert wine.
I had to look up Puttonyos. Now I have a new wine vocabulary word! Thanks!

@imallears Bravo for defending our favorite Pinot Grigio! My brand is exactly as you describe. I only treat myself to it at restaurant meals, which are not possible right now with this longgg period of isolation during the pandemic. Soon, we all hope?

@nannette1941 Aw gosh, Nanette. Living is great, it's just the circumstances right now that are tough on all of us. Hang in there. Keep in touch on Mayo Clinic Connect! Warmest wishes, Laurie

Thank you for your words of encouragement. No, I have no family, came to the US from France. I have done my best to have friends, I have cooked great meals but it is not reciprocated because "I could not do this, I could not set the table the way you do..." Just cook a hamburger and that would do for I am not looking for a contest; I am looking for friends... I am simply tired, so very tired!

@nannette1941 Welcome to our group of caring people.Im sorry your having a bad day.Im by myself too but finally realized I'm the only one that can pull myself out of those bad times. Try to find something you enjoy doing that makes you happy. You mentioned cooking that's great maybe you can cook for a shelter or rescue mission somewhere Just a thought I like to paint/ color so I immerse myself in this pretty soon I'm more upbeat and not so isolated. At times I miss my ones that have passed away but try not to dwell on it. Hope you will feel better

@nannette1941 I understand the friend situation. Many of the friends I once had have moved away to warmer climates or to other towns and smaller homes. Maybe you should try having some of the friends over whom you cooked for before and just make a simple, humble meal so they won't feel as challenged. It's not about the food, it's about being together. We used to have a big Christmas party for all of the relatives on my husband's side and one year I was not up to doing all of that cooking. My son convinced me it wasn't about the food, it was about getting together and we ordered pizza out and people brought a few desserts, plus we ate on paper plates!

@lioness has some really excellent suggestions. I know it's difficult to get started, I'm bad at that myself, making myself do something new. I have been thinking of joining a book club for months but have not taken that step. Have you considered a book club? I find getting out for a walk can be really uplifting too, particularly in these times.

There's always someone here on Connect to connect to also.

@nannette1941. Well Nanette, you are not alone. I'm sorry you have this feeling. I live by myself too and sometimes the loneliness just gets into my head. This is a trying time, my friends and I agree that not only does it do a number on out physical health, it also affects us mentally too.

You mentioned you like cooking, have you thought of putting your culinary skills online or on paper? As @contentandwell suggested, I go for a walk when I feel a little down, put my earbuds on and listen to some oldies. Music helps.

I have been facing some health issues due to delay in taking care of them, covid fear.. My mantra is one day at a time. Is there a senior center where you live? They're probably closed now, but if they open up, consider joining a few classes. I'm fortunate that my city has great services for seniors, like free movie nights and coffee socials. I'll be glad when they're opened again.

Take care!

Why not treat yourself at home? Say once a week .
It won’t go bad ya know,

I like restaurants that let you bring your own wine and just charge a corkage fee. My favorite Italian restaurant in Orlando with the singing staff and grilled octopus does that. They know my son and DIL and family well and comment on my son’s wine choices. He often gets top notch wines from clients so I expect we will be having some over Easter weekend and for my birthday weekend (of which there are 2 with a possible trip).

Anyway, have a pretend restaurant meal at home either home cooked or take out....dress accordingly...have candles etc....stash any non adults in another room with pizza. Stream or rent a good movie....dessert later.

FL Mary...cheers
