Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@sueinmn, Sounds like a double/triple pleasure day...can't leave out the Dairy Queen treat! lol Was unfamiliar with the disc golf game you mentioned. Dr. Google provided photos. Looks like fun!

@fiesty76 It was fun - until I got up yesterday & realized the disc golf messed with my unexercised shoulder & it was in great pain. Also, for some reason I was very tired and took the day off completely from all but basic stretching, hand therapy & grocery shopping - even took a nap & let hubby cook dinner! Better today, already deep-cleaned the kitchen, and am going to walk while it's cool. Then maybe we'll clean out the refrigerator - looks like I let something drip so there's some sticky shelves, and I noticed many "almost empty" sauce and condiment bottles accumulating.

@lioness. Great minds think alike! I had sciatica once. It came about when i was reaching into the shopping cart to put my groceries onto the conveyor belt, i could not straighten up. The store had to load the groceries into my car and helped me get in. Very embarrassing. Hope you feel better soon.

@mayofeb2020 I do feel better now hope you do also . As soon as he adjusted me I could feel the nerve release and walk without pain. How are you doing today?

@lioness. Glad you got pain-free with just one visit! I have spinal stenosis. When it eas diagnosed a few years ago, the ortho doctor tor said I'm not a candidate for surgery... Thank goodness,... But i have to live with a little pain. So if my pain level goes from 10 to a 5, i can handle it. I go to my chiropractor every now and then, although my children and doctors do not approve. The adjustments seems to help. I have been doing more walking this week. I may go back again next week, depending on how i feel. I used to go for a massage every 2 weeks, even though it stretched my budget a little, but it was wonderful therapy. I'll be back when they open up again. Glad it looks like the weather is cooling down. Can't wait till fall.

I was told I had spinal stenosis and i need surgery, but I traveled to mayo for a second option and was told no I didn't need surgery.
I have never considered a chiropractor or massage therapy,. it is difficult to walk, I'm so tired, but don't sleep well

I really get some energy from reading all about the walks you take and the sights you see, @ellens. I just haven’t been feeling well enough to walk anywhere! And, today the temps are only in the 70s!
Keep it up!!!
