Just thinking out loud: Humans Alone vs Social

Posted by stuckonu @stuckonu, Sep 15, 2019

After watching the movie: The Martian I thought once again about being alone. I’m an artist and live alone. I often like, dare I say LOVE living alone. That said, As a HB ( Human Being ) I am an Individual and a social creature by nature. It’s difficult for me at time to explain my SELF. Sometimes I think that is a result of or perhaps a consequence of my choice to not co-habituate with another, or other HB’s.
About this time in this rumination which I’ve written about as well as “shared” with others, I often hear: “what are you trying to say?” That question at times seems to me to be an answer to the question because as I see it HB’s or as think of them now as “ modern HB’s “ are impatient so instead of allowing me to explain myself there is a need for many to hear their own voice. Instead of wanting to explain my thoughts I withdraw to the self voice that reminds me why I close to be alone.
Matt Damon in The Martian was left behind abandoned in a manner of speaking because his crew decided that there was no way that he could still be alive under the circumstance he was in. In a way they were impatient and rationalized, justified for their own wellbeing and survival to leave Mars and Matt’s body behind. In the Marines the motto to leave no one behind to a certain degree is rooted in a knowledge that, even if dead an enemy may likely desecrate a dead enemy. If anyone recalls those horrific images from all wars but in this century the most currents wars, the truth confirms this theory. It makes me think about my opening comment that HB’s are Individual and Social creatures. Maybe the error in my definition is that it doesn’t say enough about HB’s
The world that we inhabit is changing fast and perhaps that’s where impatience comes from.
Surely some here are wondering “ what is he trying to say?” So May I ask you what YOU think I’m trying to say because I am honestly interested. Maybe I can learn something about HB’s as well as my SELF because after all, I’m only YOU MAN.
Pun intended 😉

Hi Becky, Thank you for your thoughts and feelings. Will you tell me what makes you “ sad “? after reading my discussion twice?
Looking forward to your answers as well as thoughts and feels

@stuckonu What makes me sad is that you don’t share your life with others, or that you may choose not to. I like to spend time alone but I also get energy from being with people! But, I guess we’re all different😊

I’ll answer that for you. I burst out laughing when I read Grok. It means to intuitively understand someone. I believe it was coined by a science fiction writer about 50 years ago and we use to joke around when we used it. May have been an alien word when a Martian or something grokked a human so thoroughly that the alien merged with the human...or something along that line. Think I’ll start throwing it around again.

Yes... @imallears Grok was coined by Robert Heinlen (sp?) in Stranger in a Strange Land... maybe in the 60's... When I was at that point in life when I knew everything (i.e., when I went away to college), I read that book and thought I had personally found the answers to the big questions of our existence. In fact, writing this makes me want to re-read it. Maybe I'll find different answers to the big questions at 68 than I did at 18!!

Hi
My goodness...I probably read that book... use to love science fiction and he was an interesting author. SciFi got kind of ridiculous and I lost interest many years ago but still love to read offbeat stories.
I'll try to find that in the library .
It's fun to re read novels from years ago with a more mature perspective. I got 10 years on ya lol.

Yes it was Robert A Heinlein in Stranger In A Strange Land. Always wondered why his book was never made into a movie. The Book was a HUGE hit, sometimes referred to as “ a cult favorite “ the so called “ cult “ was Hippies who employed many aspects of the book into their communes and communal living. The word “ grok “ made it into most dictionaries and is used by those who know dare I say “ grok “ ( I named my Manx cat Grok “ Lastly, yes VMS or Valentine Michael Smith was an Earthling and bastard child of the two smartest individuals chosen for the first exploratory investigation of Mars made up of a team of earths best and smartest scientists ( married couples if I recall correctly ) however a baby was conceived between the male and female with the highest IQ’s but not married to each other. The baby was born on Valentines Day on Mars which in the story was inhabited by an intelligent life form. While the team was on Mars WW3 broke out on Earth stranding the team and a Soap Opera broke out on Mars when it was discovered thank “ My baby does the Hanky Panky “ was discovered on Mars and the team for a variety of reasons ceased to exist and VMS was raised and educated by Martians. When VMS was a young man Earth sent a recovery mission to bring VMS back to earth.
If anyone read or reads the book now perhaps they will GROK my post that surprisingly has gathered lots of thoughts shared here. It reminds me in many ways how VMS was received after returning to earth.
I’d love to find that some of you take the challenge and read the book to see if they can find the connections.
I’ve been thinking of starting another post in this talk about anything Group with “ CULTURE “

It’s curious to me that conclusions are drawn and assumed to be so. I often like dare I say love being with HB’s
I’d also love to find a “partner” romantically and in other ways such as a business partner, and perhaps in other ways.
Being honest I will confess that the better I get to know my self the more difficult it becomes to imagine having that happen.
A friend of mine said to me: we need to understand that everyone has baggage, but why does it take so long to find out that they have a Uhaul parked around the corner out of sight until you move in together.
BTW this person has always been in my life from the first day we met; over 50 years

@ethanmcconkey Thank you for referring me to a tutorial. I was not looking for one. Did you not want me to see your message? Because you did not begin your message with @panc2011.

@2011panc, allow me to explain. @ethanmcconkey posted the tutorial about @mentions and replies as an FYI to all members involved in this discussion thread, including yourself. It was for everyone to see and was posted to support your explanation to new members.

@2011panc- As the saying goes on FB, I'm stealing this. It's short and sweet.
