Delayed pain after bone marrow biopsy??

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Jul 4, 2019

I had a bone marrow biopsy in back hip on June 14th. By the 2nd week I felt almost completely better. Then for some unexplainable reason on the 17th day after, I had very uncomfortable pain around the area of biopsy and up towards my back left side waist. It seems to let up, and actually feels better walking, but sitting and during night I can't find a comfortable position. Cant sleep.
I'm trying advil, or tylenol, and biofreeze. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since biopsy.
No infection, no fever...could it be nerve pain? I saw my oncologist for follow up on the 27th, and I felt fine, so I never complained. I wonder if its something I did that's making the area hurt? I did give my Lab dog a bath the day I noticed the pain, and lifted him in the tub, but I was already feeling healed.
Anyone experience delayed onset of pain after a bone marrow biopsy? What to do...I dont want anymore tests...hopefully itll pass??

Good questions, @dazlin. I'm tagging fellow members @luckydog @nick0820 @robinraig @ajordan1982 @annmillercarr and @1nan, who may have experience with bone marrow biopsies to share with you.

It sounds like this might be worth a doctor's appointment or at least a call to a symptom management nurse just to be on the safe side. Do you have a number you can call?

Since my only experience with one bone marrow biopsy involved no difficulty or discomfort, I can't speak to your issue. I agree with Colleen that you need to make that call and start to find an answer. It is understandable that you don't want to enter other tests, but you also don't need to depend on guesswork for help with this pain, Are you comfortable contacting the practice that did the biopsy June 14?

I have had 4 bone marrow biopsies done. The last one was on the 12th of June is year. I did not have any pain after the first two days. I also suggest calling someone about your pain. Hope all turns out well for you. Good luck.

I had it done at Mayo Clinic. I guess I can contact my care group, but I know its gonna be, you have to come in, maybe xray, maybe MRI doubt a simple diagnosis...So, I'm trying to give it time in case its something I did, and needs to heal. I know they said 1st week not to do anything strenuous, but this came on after 2nd week. Im kinda fed up with myself because its always something to bug me. It was just about completely all better, I wasn't feeling any discomfort...then BOOM!!
Thanks everyone...I'll post back in case I have to call. Was wondering if anything experienced this.

Dave has had three bone marrow biopsies, but only had slight pain on the days he had them--nothing afterwards.

I’ve had five or six bone marrow biopsies. I usually have discomfort for a few weeks, particularly when sitting on something hard. Ice then heat was the most helpful. Hopefully it will resolve, otherwise mention it to your team.

I got through last night, no significant pain, and i finally slept, but once I got up this morning, I was uncomfortable and unable to sit in one position while having coffee. Took 2 Tylenol extra strength and went about my day. Driving hurt, but home now, cooking, etc and it's not bad. So weird...I don't understand why I felt all better, then it came on. Maybe giving my dog a bath set something back..I did have to lift him. Hes close to 70 lbs.
No worsening pain or discomfort, so I'm going to wait before i call drs. I have appointment again with my oncologist in about 3-4 months.

Hello - I’m sorry to hear about this. Did it get any better? I had a bone marrow aspiration and this kind of happened to me as well.

I found this thread on a google search. I had my only BMB January 2021. It is now June 2021. The nerve pain is unbearable. I have done literally everything I know to help it but nothing does. Physical therapy, dry needling, ice, chiro, biofreeze, cbd, aleve, and on and on. I had an appt with a pain mgmt anesthesiologist and he did xrays (as did chiro) and he thinks it has zero to do with BMB (I disagree and chiro disagrees). Either way, I guess it doesn't matter. What matters is, I need hope that it will go away. It's going on 5 months of constant pain - most in sitting, driving, sleeping. I was super active before this and now I feel crippled. Did you get relief?? I have an appt to get injection into my spine at L4/L5 next week but I don't think that's the right spot. I think it needs to be nearer to the BMB site or sciatic nerve path. I don't know how to go about telling a Dr this either!

You describe exactly what I am going through. Did you get relief? I hope so.
