Delayed pain after bone marrow biopsy??

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Jul 4, 2019

I had a bone marrow biopsy in back hip on June 14th. By the 2nd week I felt almost completely better. Then for some unexplainable reason on the 17th day after, I had very uncomfortable pain around the area of biopsy and up towards my back left side waist. It seems to let up, and actually feels better walking, but sitting and during night I can't find a comfortable position. Cant sleep.
I'm trying advil, or tylenol, and biofreeze. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since biopsy.
No infection, no fever...could it be nerve pain? I saw my oncologist for follow up on the 27th, and I felt fine, so I never complained. I wonder if its something I did that's making the area hurt? I did give my Lab dog a bath the day I noticed the pain, and lifted him in the tub, but I was already feeling healed.
Anyone experience delayed onset of pain after a bone marrow biopsy? What to do...I dont want anymore tests...hopefully itll pass??

@ladyindistress1211 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I have had 4 BMBs. The first one was with a doc who was in a hurry, it was just before her lunch hour! Fortunately at that time, I lived only 2 miles away from her office, and living alone, was able to get home to recuperate from that unnecessarily uncomfortable procedure. My last three have been with my current hematologist/oncologist. He is 2.5 hrs drive from where I live now, and I go alone. He has an awesome technique, never rushes, and between him and his nurse, we discuss a wide variety of topics that keep me distracted. If you have a good friend or family member to accompany you, do that. Just knowing you have someone along with you may help alleviate some anxiety! Then, come back and tell us how smoothly it all went, please.

The pelvic bone in the back is not the only site that can be used. The anterior pelvic crest can also be used (site for mine) and I know someone who had it in his shoulder blade.

I too live alone and with the exception of the first one (done in the hospital as part of my diagnosis and induction therapy) I drove myself to and from the procedure!
I have had 3 (being treated for AML) all 3 have been basically the same and tolerable. The discomfort was minimal and the anticipation is far worse (it was for me) than the procedure itself. The lidocaine used to numb the area is effective and worked well. The most uncomfortable part is lying on my stomach. I have a spine fusion in L4-5 thus my back lacks flexibility. I wish you well and do post how it went, please.

@sonieaml I also live alone and specifically requested sedation for the procedure; I was extremely fearful of the pain and didn't want to be awake for it. I did have to have a driver take me to the hospital and home. I asked a relative and they were able to do it. If you need a ride, there are services that provide for a driver and someone to be at the facility with you.

@georgiagurl thank you. Fortunately my pain threshold is high and am comfortable with the BMB procedure with the lidocaine for numbing. I would never discourage anyone to forego sedation especially with a fear of pain…I pray that your results are better than expected and keep us posted please.
