Vitamin K2 and Calcium (CAC) Score

Posted by oubobcat @oubobcat, Apr 6, 2019

Have high CAC score (1400) but no blockage evident. Great stress test. 62 yr old male. Taking statin and baby aspirin. Any recommendation on the use of K2 also?

My heart doctor and regular physician said it was unproven as far as benefits....

My heart doc has a preventative practice and he has me on Kforce, Nattokinase and Coratin for natural vitamin supplements. The Kforce is K2

Hello @oubobcat,

Welcome to Connect. Vitamin K, does help the body make blood clotting proteins. Both K1 (green leafy veg.) and K2 (dairy, fermented foods) have some antioxidant properties, but clinical trials have not shown any evidence that vitamin K supplements can slow calcium deposits in artery walls.

I’d encourage you to view this discussion, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/im-having-multiple-odd-episodes-that-are-keeping-me-undiagnosed-help/ where @jenniferhunter @johnwes5819 @slynnb @becsbuddy @predictable and others are talking about vitamins K and D and other supplements.

I’ve also copied Mentor @predictable’s caution about vitamin K, for your reference: "Please be careful about taking Vitamin K! Discuss that with your medical doctor before following any nonmedical advice. Vitamin K is an antidote for Warfarin (Coumadin), an anticoagulant that is widely used to reduce chances of blood clots forming within the heart and other parts of the circulatory system. Those clots can really damage the brain, the heart, the kidneys, and other vital organs by blocking the flow of oxygen-rich blood to those organs.”

Here’s some more information from Mayo Clinic: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20350806

I’m tagging @mcphee @gailfaith @drankin @ca426 @luckyg @botexas @mcristodero @thankful who’ve shared some valuable insights about vitamins in these discussions on Connect:

@oubobcat, have you asked your doctor about including this supplement?

@bryang

Aged 69, I undertook a calcium score as a preventative test, even though I am fit and all my annual blood tests and vitamin levels were positive.
My score was 1500
I took a stress test, result negative.
I do 6 daily HIIT classes per week and every second day do weights including 4 sets of 10 chin-ups and 20 bench presses of 30kg.
Diet good - eat only one meal per day and I am daily in ketosis - take no medication, never experienced any form of heart or chest pain.
Started taking 2 180 mcg tablets of K2 Menaquinone 7 every 12 hours.
Has anyone had experience of reducing their calcium score by taking K2, as literature search is very encouraging.
Intend to do another calcium score in 6 months time to see if there is a reduction.
Does any one know when the results of the Dutch trial on K2 supplementation will be released in 2018.
Australian cardiologist I spoke with was not aware of any K2 influence on calcium score and was skeptical, even though I should him the discussion paper.
Would appreciate any comments or feedback.

Welcome to Connect, @bryang,

I'd like to introduce you to @elizabethbryant @hazelnut @eileena, who've written about K2 supplements, and I'm certain they will be able to offer more information.

I’m tagging a few members who may be able to share some of their experiences with high calcium levels and the stress this causes. Please meet @mcphee @gailfaith @jrismyname @hopeful33250 @predictable @dennisl27 @michellr. You can view some of the conversations taking place in these discussions on Connect:

@bryang, what has your doctor suggested to help lower the calcium score?

Would like to hear results on your next calcium score. A lot like you, high calcium score, but on nuclear stress test, scored a METS score of 13,equivalent to a 26 year old and I am 75. I will look into K2 also and ask my Doc. I exercise every day for 75 minutes of aerobics and weights. Do not stop for entire time.

Bryang, I wish you well. We are in a similar position. Are you able to tolerate that much K2? I have been taking just one of same per day, thinking of increasing to one two times per day, but concerned about clotting. I take one chewable baby aspirin per day. Also, I am extremely curious to find out how your six month follow up calcium score test goes. I read the study a couple of months ago and my recollection is that there was a significantly lower death rate and more supple arteries after three years of one tablet per day.

....Both my heart doctor and regular MD's opinion is that K2 is unproven in helping...lust passing along....

I recommend that all in this group also join the High Calcium Score group. Concerns seem identical. Lots of information there.
