Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

@lioness - I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree with you a bit on the salmon. I actually enjoy farm raised more than wild. We have a great fish market here in town and they are conscientious in their sourcing. We probably eat farm raised salmon every week and thoroughly enjoy it.

The other thing we eat is fresh local shrimp. JK @contentandwell - This was one on the things I missed most when we moved to Boston. Don't get me wrong, I love the lobsters. I would kill for some clams w/ bellies at a local clam shack. But sadly, in the Northeast, the shrimp were frozen.

Here in Northeast FL, we get beautiful local shrimp - from the Atlantic - not the Gulf. We also get practically local shrimp called Key West Pink from a little south but they are brought in w/o freezing them. I pretty much love all seafood so I'm glad I'm from the East Coast.

I'm sad to find out that an 8 oz cup of chai can be loaded with 130 calories! I purchased a chai mix product from the health food store yesterday. This chai is loaded with sugar! More than a soda I'd say. What a bummer, I'll have to take it off my list of 'good stuff' 🙁 Or perhaps I can find a sugar free chai mix.

@Erinmfs- Good morning. I have recently started drinking turmeric chai tea made by Rishi. It's excellent and takes just some boiling water and 5 minutes steeping time. It's delicious. Turmeric, in order to "work" need a fat, and pepper. I'm afraid that it'll always be high in calories because of the fat. I do not add any milk, but I do add honey because the pepper can make it taste bitter. Turmeric is a green tea.

@lioness, @debbraw: I can understand liking farmed salmon because it tends to have a milder taste. However you should be aware that farmed fish, especially salmon can be very toxic, no matter how careful your fishmonger is.

You sure are lucky to have fresh shrimp!

Good morning. I just came across a rice made with vegetables! It's called Right Rice. There are several flavors but I'm going to try and get the original, made with vegetables. Dave's gone shopping. The air is terrible and very very humid so I have to stay home.

@Merprep I don't do farm fish of anykind just fresh from Alaska. I have seen those fish so crowded in the farm tanks and that isn't what I want in my system Debbra likes the taste of them they maybe milder but I like the wild caught . I use the tea you recommended in the evenings. The Turmeric is a spice from India and is anti inflammatory that s why its so good for our inflammation in our bodies.as it has curcurmin the yellow in it.

@contentandwell I like the vanilla flavored but I'm pretty sure I saw the unflavored It does have 24g of sugar whether they have one with no sugar I don't know. It is dairy and soy free. Hope you can find it There are a lot of almond farms up North in Ventura Co. when I go to Fresno there are miles of farms producing everything.

@lioness I do watch calories and carbs, being a bit diabetic. It's getting to the point where I have to watch just about everything! Along with the calories and carbs, I have to watch sodium, now cholesterol, and of course lactose. So far the lactose is the worst thing to have to avoid. If I become gluten intolerant too I will throw in the towel.

@Erinmfs You can buy chai bags that are unsweetened (with regular tea bags) and add whatever you want yourself. I generally drink it plain or with a little creamer. I never add sugar.

@debbraw I don't think I have ever seen wild Atlantic shrimp around here, except for those tiny ones and I don't find them very flavorful. Along with feeling that raw salmon is healthier, I do like the taste better. I splurged yesterday and bought King salmon -- it is usually 29.99 a pound but was on sale for 19.99 a pound. It was so delicious. We usually have coho around here, but in season, now, we have sockeye and King. Both are much better than coho.

I was just thinking yesterday about shrimp vs lobster. I love shrimp too, and definitely as much as lobster.

The fish manager at Whole Foods tells me that their farmed fish is responsibly farmed but I just do not trust it anyway, and I will NEVER eat tilapia. We usually have fish twice a week.

I will definately look for chai in tea bag form from now on. I purchased a product called Oregon chai, which turned out to be a powdered mix with 130 calories and loaded with sugar.

I did an experiement recently. We don't have Whole Foods where I live. My local organic supermarket sold me Baja shrimp from Baja Mexico. I purchased shrimp from Walmart, the package claims the product is from India! How can that be possible, India is on the opposite side of the globe from here! Idon't believe the label that this raw shrimp originated from the other side of the globe, India. What do you think?

where's @jakedduck1 ? I bet he's the guy who broke the server, are you receiving emails from hubapplication too? 🙂 or maybe it was @lioness ?
