Hi Debbra I must said that I do have an awesome physical therapist, she pays very close attention to her patients. She notice that I wasn't performing as much as I had been which resulted in me losing ROM. I begun telling her what I was experiencing and she immediately text my surgeon and informed him that I need to be seen within the week. To answer your question I can't recall doing anything differently and definitely no falls. I really don't know what cause this problem. I did go to my doctor and he said that he is very puzzled he's not sure what is going on. He did an x-ray and said everything looks normal. He gave me a lab slip to have blood work to make sure there is no infection, he said that if the blood work comes back normal he is going to refer me to another orthopedic doctor for a second opinion.

@lynnwade54 - I am impressed with the sound of your physical therapist AND your surgeon. It must be a real relief to have the OS himself seek out a 2nd opinion vs. trying to figure out own your own whether it is time. I am hoping it is not infection. I know you can't wait for the lab results. Is there anything that makes you feel like it might be inflammation - heat around the area, tenderness, etc?

I am also 10 months out from TKR and have the burning/stinging pain. Any idea what causes this? I have my one year checkup in about 7 weeks so I'll talk to her then. But meanwhile I'm wondering if this is scar tissue. I have good range of motion . . can straighten knee totally and bend 120+ degrees.

I’m one week out of left TKR and I too am having horrible burning on my operative leg at the shin. Pain meds help.. but I’m trying to cut down on them. Is this normal? What causes it? It happened after PT today

My burning started on my shin on week 4 on week 6. Feels like the worse sunburn! Light touch and oxy helps but trying to avoid medication. Knee is doing great I was able to flex pass 120 on week 3. Walking without assistance but burning an issue.

@lk3xs Were both TKRs the same brand/model of knee? I am thinking possible allergy.

I had the same sensation, same place. Doctor put me on Gapapentin, twice a day. Got better, went off of it, then had a MUA two weeks ago. Started again, back on gabapentin. It really helped

Gabapentin a great drug. I was put on it for shingles. BUT!! What my dermatologist, internist and orthopedic doctor (because he said stay on them because it was helping my knee pain) didnt tell me you need to taper off. They cause SEVERE WITHDRAWAL symptoms. No one told me you had to taper off. I had just ran out and immediately went into migraines and shakes. Took me over 4 months to get off. Awful experience. Beware

Hi @jetter - Welcome to Connect! I just had a TKR two weeks ago (thankfully w/o the burning sensation you describe). @connie1559 is right that there's a wealth of knowledge on TKR's in this forum. And @contentandwell is spot-on regarding the fact that every single TKR is different - not just every person but every surgery. I've been fortunate with my recovery, but my right knee was much slower than my left in almost every aspect of recuperation. Can I ask when you had your surgery? Also, aside from the burning sensation, how are you doing with range of motion and strength in your knee - and with pain management? I find that if I can control the pain and inflammation, I don't have as much swelling so I do better at my PT exercises.

I had my first knee replacement September 12 and my second one November 7. I have been on narcotics since June , am anxious to get off of them. The last two or three days my second knee replacement the skin around the area sometimes feels like it’s on fire it, it will last 1 to 2 hours and then it goes away. It comes back it’s surprising moments out of the blue. Today I went to the store and halfway through I felt like my pants were rubbing on it but they weren’t. I had my hips replaced 16 years ago my shower to replace this past January 5 years ago my desk collapse in my back and I have a basket at three for level. But I’ve never had burning around the skin before. Another new experience.

@jetter Hi, and welcome to Connect.
I have had two TKRs and not had a burning sensation after either, but we all heal differently and have different experiences. I know of people who had both knees done at the same time, something that I realize most doctors will not do, and the knees recovered differently from each other!
I would definitely call my surgeon to check on this just to make sure that he feels it is within the realm of acceptable discomfort.

I did have more pain after my second TKR than I did after my first. During that time my surgeon was seeing me frequently to check up on it. The pain suddenly lifted, almost overnight, and from that point on that knee recovered better than my first knee had.

I definitely have more pain in my second TKR, but because I’ve been on narcotics so long I think they’re not working very well. The doctors are trying to figure out how to help me because I’m usually at six to eat even on three different narcotics. I’m just so tired of being in so much pain. I guess this too shall pass, I just need to be patient but I’m not very good with that.

Hi Irol, I had a spot of burning on the inside of the knee. Both the PT and Dr. Said it was a nerve they sometimes have to move or cut and it would subside, and it has 😁 Maybe your is the same and just nee dd's s a little more time. Wish you the best.

I am only 1 month out from my Right TKR. My doctor and physical therapists acted like he had never heard of anyone experiencing burning with a TKR before. It's been keeping me awake at night, the burning runs the length of my incision from the bottom to just above the knee cap. I did have a burning pain on the inside of the right knee but the therapist said to massage it gently in an upwards motion. I am trying gentle massage on the incision. Some gentle pressure with the palm of my hand. But in a few minutes, it starts again, so I am awake at 4AM.
