C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

When you have various problems and new infections as i did , i turned to the fecal transplant and THANK GOD it worked,, it gives you a fresh start with good bacteria in your system. Process is just like a colonoscopy and insurances cover it. Hope it can help anyone who is interested .

Yes, your guts can be normal again but must watch your diet and maybe take medication prescribed by your doctor.

@gfpp I continue to take Visbiome and saccharomyces boulardii, alternating between the two!

I was diagnosed with CDiff approximately 2 1/2 months ago and was placed on Vancomycin. I am feeling fine right now but am having abnormal Creatinine and GFR levels. My Mayo GI is sending me to a Kidney Specialist. I am trying not to worry but am wondering if the Vancomycin which is such a strong antibiotic affected my kidneys and they need to heal.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi @cece55, I wanted to make sure other members dealing with C. diff saw your question, so you will see I moved your inquiry about the powerful antibiotic to the discussion about C. diff and what can happen. I am glad you are feeling ok at least.

Did your GI suggest that it could have an adverse reaction on other organs?

Hi Amanda,

Thank you for moving my question to the correct area. I am hoping someone might respond. My GI did not warn me about Vancomycin but when I researched it I read that it can impair kidney function. It is such a strong antibiotic. What choice do we have, though?

I have a Kidney Consult April 13th at Mayo with a nephrologist. That is the soonest that I can get in. I am hoping my bloodwork prior to this appointment will show improvement. I was so hoping that someone would post a similar problem happening to them and that the kidney repaired itself. I am very nervous about this new problem and need to hear something positive.

Thank You,
CeCe 55

Hi, I have very low iron, ferritin and other low counts, only 10 % saturation. Any ideas why? Do get infusions when low, only to get down in a month, headache and no energy! Can you help, margo

Hi @cece55 I did have cdif and was on Vancomycin for about 7 weeks from jun-july 2019 and as far as I know now I've had no ill effects. I was in the hospital for another reason for 5 of the weeks and came home with taking 125 my twice a day for a couple more weeks. Cdif never came back and no kidney issues. So I hope that helps? I'm available for any other questions you may have.
Have a Blessed Day

Hi @margockim, welcome back. can I ask that you provide a little more information? Are these symptoms in addition to you having C. diff?

....question time: I had c.diff in 2018 and fecal incontinence after and never felt same; physical and nervous breakdown but coming out of it... slowly; I had lidocaine injection end of sept. for a stitch in a cut with mix of another drug and woke up shaking from head to foot; they went and i forgot about it. have had quite a bit of dental work done over past few months with numbing agent and gradually my neuropathy became more painful, wooden like and then internal tremors which I have as I type.. havent had them this bad for a week or so. my outsides are not visibly shaking but mainly my arms back, sides and down legs; cant type for too logn right now.. have been waiting couple of months for teleconference with nurologist and an ent as have plugged sore ears and tinnitus.. sorry to throw this out there; but i would love a doctor to see me while I am having this "attack" but by time i go to emerge it will have passed.... it is not painful as other issues but sure feels horrible and there is a certain pressure to it... would it be possible this is starting from my colon due to diarrhea for 15 years and fecal incontinence or more neuropathy... my b.p is up a bit but not bad.. thanks and again sorry for the disjointed typing but just wondered f anyone knows what i should do... J. thanks
