C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

I'm suffered for 7 days with what I thought was a bad case of the stomach flu until I went to my family doctor and they requested a stool sample and found from that that I had c-diff I believe this is the sickest I've ever been in my entire life

Can I ask how much Florastor you take in a day? I take it twice a day.

@ginej I'm not sure if you were asking me or someone else. I took two a day while I was taking the Vancomycin for the 3rd bout. While taking Deficid for my 4th bout, I also took two a day. I now take one Florastor and one other less expensive brand that is 440 mg of S. Boulardii every day. I really prefer it because it survives stomach acid and goes to work in the colon. I've not relapsed since last October. I knock on wood every time I say that. After 4 bouts in 2018, I've never been through anything so debilitating. I will never take Clindamycin again which start this terrible ordeal.

I still have days I just feel awful. I just want my life back. Can’t gain weight. Just don’t want another relapse but the doctor says if I don’t have active cdiff he can prescribe dificid. I am just so upset to think I have to get sick to get what will help.

From what I've been reading, more and more doctors are no longer prescribing Flagyl for the first episode of Cdiff. They're using Vancomycin. I hope more doctors will prescribe Dificid (fidaxamicin) if there is a relapse. Cliff is so hard on our bodies. And it takes months after an episode for the colon and intestinal tract to get back to normal. And it's not only a physical challenge, but also a mental one. Whenever I have diarrhea, for even ONE day, I fear Cdiff is back and my emotions run rampant. I thought I did everything right, yet I went through FOUR episodes of Cdiff in 2018. And with every episode, my chances of a reoccurrence went higher. I did the bleach, the wipes, the hand washing, you name it. We were very careful and none of my family members were infected. But I also lived with that fear. My heart goes out to all of you who are fighting this battle. It's something I'd never even heard of until I took Clindamycin and a couple weeks later, became so sick. I now feel like a "Cdiff expert." 🙂 I wish you all well in 2019.

@terridrag Is this your first episode of Cdiff? Unfortunately, some of the things you're going through may be caused by the Vanco and not Cdiff. Vancomycin is a strong drug and also used on MRSA patients. If this isn't your first episode, you might want to ask your doctor about Dificid (fidaxamicin) if you have a relapse. I had less side affects with it and it only kills the Cdiff spores and leaves your good bacteria alone which help to fight off the Cdiff. Are you doing the Vanco taper or just taking it for 10 days?

@terridrag My heart goes out to you. With my last (4th) episode, last October, I lost 10 pounds the first two weeks. I put it all back on over the holidays. Try to stay positive and hopefully you'll feel better as soon as you can get off the Vanco. And take Florastor daily. Please keep us updated how you're doing.
