C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

@terridrag I'm so sorry to hear you're having so many problems with the meds. Vancomycin is a strong med. After my second bout of Cdiff, I took it for 10 days. With the third bout, I was on the Vanco pulse and taper for 5 or 6 weeks. I was good for 3 weeks after that bout. And then Cdiff came back for a 4th time. Cdiff spores are not easy to kill and with each bout, the chance of reoccurrence goes up. After my 4th bout, my insurance approved Dificid. It only kills the Cdiff spores and not your good bacteria. I wish I would have taken it after my first bout. I finished Dificid on October 26th. It's very expensive. And even the co-pay was almost $1,000. I was to the point that a fecal transplant would be the next thing. I got Cdiff from taking Clindamycin for a sinus infection. I'm leery of ever taking another antibiotic.

@terridrag I agree. I have a friend who wasn't given Dificid until after her 2nd bout of Cdiff. She also got Cdiff from taking Clindamycin prior to a dental root canal. And my insurance asked if I'd taken Vancomycin before they would approve the Dificid. If you do have a relapse, I suggest you ask your doctor to prescribe Dificid (fidaxamicin).

I'm suffered for 7 days with what I thought was a bad case of the stomach flu until I went to my family doctor and they requested a stool sample and found from that that I had c-diff I believe this is the sickest I've ever been in my entire life

I had issues when I was given vancomycin for C-Diff. I am very sensitive to medications and became very sick after taking this antibiotic. I had to stop taking it after only taking 4 pills. I then went back to the Dr and they told me to take Florastor each day. I think 2 two or 3 -4 times a day but not sure on that. To my amazement my C-Diff was gone after a short time of taking this med. I was retested and no more C-Diff. You might want to get some Florastor and see if that will help you.

Maybe try taking a Florastor twice a day, even 3 times a day. I give you credit because I got so sick on Vancomycin,I almost went to the ER. Best of luck to you.

I, too, was diagnosed with cdiff back in September, 2018 after taking clindamycin for a tooth abscess. Have had 3 flare-ups since. Have taken flagyl, vancomycin twice and just finished tapering vancomycin for 6 weeks. I am waiting for the other shoe to drop any day now. And scared to death! Am 71 years young and feel a lot older. Started out at 100 lbs and now weigh 88. I take vsl#3 every day. Just saw my gastro doctor this week. Have an appointment in 2months unless I get sick again before that time. Fmt was mentioned to me as the next step. I feel for everyone who is dealing with this terrible disease. I, like others, had never even heard of cdiff before. I wonder why that is? Anyway, I have read everything I can find on this subject. I look forward to chatting with all of you!

I feel your pain the worst thing I’ve ever been through. I just finished taper Vanco. I take Florastor twice a day really think it’s helpful. Highly recommend. Prayers sent. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

@ngorman25 @terridrag I was told by my GI to take Florastor after my 3rd bout of Cdiff while I was doing the Vanco taper. But three weeks after finishing the Vanco, I had a 4th relapse. I then took Dificid (fidaxamicin). I wish I would have taken it earlier. I along with another younger friend have both taken Dificid and we have not relapsed. It's been almost three years for her and I finished the RX on Oct. 26th. If you have anymore relapses, I would suggest you ask your doctor about Dificid. It's expensive and your insurance may not pay for it until you've tried Vancomycin. I've had 3 back surgeries and the recovery from those was much easier than going through Cdiff. I wish they would take Clindamycin off the market. I know ANY antibiotic can give you Cdiff, but this one sure seems to be the most common cause. I'm now faithfully taking Florastor every single day. It works must better than other probiotics because the acid in our stomach does not affect it. So it gets right to your colon. There are other brands besides Florastor that are less expensive. You need to make sure they have enough Saccharomyces Boulardii in them.
