C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

I'm suffered for 7 days with what I thought was a bad case of the stomach flu until I went to my family doctor and they requested a stool sample and found from that that I had c-diff I believe this is the sickest I've ever been in my entire life

@losthope Yes, I finished the Dificid on October 26th after my 4th relapse. It has not returned. And I knock on wood every time I say that. I'm also taking the Florastor probiotic every day faithfully. My GI recommended that since it's not affected by the acid in our stomachs and goes to the colon where the C.diff spores seem to thrive. And the Dificid only kills the spores and not your good bacteria. How are you doing? @ngarriso , I'm so happy to hear that you are doing so well. Great news.

I had c diff three times I had it, got over it, then got it again and then one more time. The first time I was put in the hospital as I was having breathing problems too so they were thinking pneumonia. So after the third round of being on antibiotics I finally got rid of it. A lot of washing my hands, washing bedding in bleach, wearing rubber gloves when using the bathroom and staying away from people while I was contagious. Have not had it since and I would say this was 3 or 4 years ago. They put me on two antibiotics each time. Everyone always has the bacterial c diff in their gut...… its one of the bad bacterial that balances things out. I just looked that up just to see if I was remember right. Good look to those that have it and take care of yourself...…… washing hands, disinfecting so that you don't get the bug again...….. Chlorox is the only thing that kills it as it can be contagious on surfaces for a few days.... I just got the chlorox wipes and kept cleaning...…

The only thing that gets rid of C-diff spores is bleach and 99% of wipes, including Clorox, don’t contain bleach anymore. I had to order Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes online. I’ve been told that Sam’s Club carries them, but haven’t looked.

Terri, you said you feel horrible. Can you tell us more about the side effects you are experiencing? How much longer are you to take vancomycin?

@terridrag I'm so sorry to hear you're having so many problems with the meds. Vancomycin is a strong med. After my second bout of Cdiff, I took it for 10 days. With the third bout, I was on the Vanco pulse and taper for 5 or 6 weeks. I was good for 3 weeks after that bout. And then Cdiff came back for a 4th time. Cdiff spores are not easy to kill and with each bout, the chance of reoccurrence goes up. After my 4th bout, my insurance approved Dificid. It only kills the Cdiff spores and not your good bacteria. I wish I would have taken it after my first bout. I finished Dificid on October 26th. It's very expensive. And even the co-pay was almost $1,000. I was to the point that a fecal transplant would be the next thing. I got Cdiff from taking Clindamycin for a sinus infection. I'm leery of ever taking another antibiotic.
