C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

@pines

I'm going to have to try mint tea and get the capsules. After 4 bouts of Cdiff last year, I've never in my life had as much gas as I do right now. Late evening and early morning are just terrible for me.

I'd also try simethicone

@pines Are you talking about burping or the other end?

So gas.... yes! SO MUCH GAS! Not burping.. gas. It was bad with CDiff and still is. I had diarrhea 8 times yesterday. I’m on a high fiber diet because I was having constipation. I feel like no matter what I eat, I can’t get it right.

@ngotman25. I had 4 relapses & has an FMT. I was down to 85 pounds somy GI was getting very worried. I had it on Feb 28, 2019. My tummy never feels right, but at least the actve Cdiff is gone. My GI said I would always rest positive on the PCR test because we would always have spores, not toxins but we are carriers. I’m afraid of lots of foods I’m not sure ab because I also have diverticulosis. I just can’t have a flare of DIVERTICULITIS. That would put me in the hospital on I. Antibiotics. Also I have trouble with constipation. I take probiotics & fiber con. I also drink Kefir & eat yogurt. I’m so tired of everything making my side hurt. I still feel weak & feel like it never feel well again. That Cdiff monster has ruined my life. Anyone have constipation & what do you do. ?

@sandyabbey I am so sorry to hear you suffer from diverticulosis/ litis..,, my MIL had CDiff 2 years ago and got it again in March this year. She never had the FMT. They think she got it again because some was still in the “pockets” of diverticulitis/losis and it festered there. I wonder what your doc suggests about preventing that? The good news is my MIL knew what it was this time and caught it. Actually, I knew what it was and reminded her and had family take her to the doc. She is better now!

I sure hope the spores aren’t in my diverticulosis pockets. I an sometimes constipated. I’m worried that the stool will get in the pockets.

I don’t know if there is anyway to know or prevent it from happening. Maybe a conversation with your doc? This was only one doc’s opinion. Why it took 2 years to reinfect is a question I had.

Prevention of CDiff [and any of the other 'Super Bugs' that are out there including MRSA, Strep, etc] is a 50/50 proposal between the physician and you. In the surgical theatre, what they do to you depends on making NO mistakes as well as how well you follow their instructions, before, and afterwards. IT ALSO requires a good communication and understanding between the two of you, no holds barred. I got the spore/bug because my OB/GYN neglected to tell me she hadn't done my surgery but for a few times AND she used disposable sutures instead of long-lasting sutures in a place where it was required. I got a SUPER INFECTION a week later that nearly killed me and put me in a coma for a week, gave me tinnitus (from the 4 antibiotics), more hearing loss and a gut that stopped working. She never apologized and I never saw her again after the surgery. The nurse-doctor relationships are a rather difficult line to walk since we both know what we want but often disagree on different terms. Obliviously, this one went south and I have been working to right it ever since. My only hope is a stool transplant or work on cleansing my whole body with natural foods, water and limiting my medications. I lost some weight with my celery / lemon water, I have altered my abnormal lab results to show their are good changes happening with my new diet and I did not get the flu this year like the last couple of years. Our livers are a power source for our bodies and if we understand how to work with them as an endocrine organ, we can help our body fight these bugs circulating in our gut as well as fight what has been our history.
Our world is a dirty place and surprisingly we all pick up that stuff in our skin, eyes, nose, mouth, etc and that has to be gotten rid of one way or another. Guess where it has to go...through our gut. So, if we take care of our 32 feet of gut properly with the right liquids, food sources and less stress, we allow our liver, pancreas, bowels, stomach, teeth, etc to do what they need to do. When you have a chance, truly look at what your GI Tract looks like and think about what you are eating and drinking and ask - is that helping me or hinding me from feeling well? Cause and Effect plays a lot in this picture. Eloise

Drink water with lemon in it. This will put back the hydrochloric acid in your stomach that we all need. We are all carriers - yes but that's not the worse of it. We need to build up our gut with the good bacteria or microbiome. This is your LT goal. This takes time but in the mean time - you want to eat regular food too but in a measured amount. Moderation is the word you want to remember.

This is the time you want to try all different type of new foods but also some regular foods. This is summer time so there are different fruits out there including blueberries and other berries that are full of everything you need to help you LIVER which will help care for you gut. Anything GREEN - will also help - find them in your grocer.... eat them anyway you like them. Granola - dates, nuts, cranberries, cherries are out there now....eat them in moderation as well....peaches, etc, and bananas will sooth your stomach, chamomile tea is good for jittery stomachs.
Remember there should be limits on these : dairy, eggs, corn, wheat and canola oil To see more - refer to Anthony Williams book on Life Changing Foods. or I can give you answers to your questions Eloise

@sue6408 I just bought Gas-X yesterday and I'm going to try that and see if it helps with the terrible gas I wake up with almost every morning. It says it also helps with bloating so you might want to try that too.

GAS X, helped me a lot. The meds that helped me the MOST is: calcium polycarbophil. I take 3 tablets 3X a day. I have horrible diarrhea and gas. Mainly in the morning and till around 2pm. Some days it doesn't go away at all with my stomach pain so bad I don't know if I can stand another moment of suffering. I don't have any trouble with constipation like some folks do. The calcium polycarbophil helps with both. I hope this helps you.
