I’ve given up meat, although I will eat fish or seafood on occasion. I’ve cut back on dairy and am trying to eat as little fat and sodium as possible. Sugar has always been a problem but I’ve improved. I’ve been reading different books on diets for heart disease. I am interested in why you drink sipping vinegar and turmeric. What is A1c?
@jackiekos A1c is a test that gives your glucose reading for the previous few months. It is much more relevant and accurate than the simple glucose strip monitoring. Most pros will tell you that 5.6 is the top acceptable range, but I feel good about keeping it under 6.5 now. You can have your own A1c meter, but the docs prefer you don't. Job security.

Hi @jackiekos. Since I'm in recovery from a "small stroke" from a blood clot that came from my heart, I gladly offer any insights you think might be of interest. I also have a heart problem -- atrial fibrillation; its effects are almost imperceptible, although it's probably the cause of the little blood clot I had. Most important, I think you're doing quite well, based on what I read so far in this discussion.
Why did you think there might be a stroke in your near future? Did that come from your medical team? Have you had any stroke symptoms? If they happen, are you committed to calling 9-1-1 right away to get to an emergency room without delay? Bottom line, though, as a medical observer (not a professional), I don't see a stroke threat in your situation as you describe it.
Your symptoms, recent medical procedures, and medication all seem aimed at recovery from the heart procedures you experienced -- mitral valve repair last October followed by clearing out three moderately narrowed cardiac arteries. The beta blocker and statin are common medications after these surgical procedures. Your other two medications also are common -- one for anxiety after surgery and the other to boost important thyroid output.
Has this discussion with us over the past week helped build your confidence that you're on the right track? Beyond a healthy diet and regular physical activity, has your doctor suggested other treatments? Martin
Here is an article everyone should be aware if. It talks about a form of Amyloidosis but is important for every person with and disorder or is a caregiver for such a person.
Thank you for replying. I don't always walk or eat right. I do take the meds I hate. This all took me by surprise and I haven't reacted well to the news. In fact it's consumed me. I'm trying to change my thinking.
I experienced a Major Stroke and realized I needed to change my attitude and my diet! I'm really trying to walk daily and make better decisions about my eating habits!
I feel a lot less sorry for myself after reading your post. I need to have a better attitude and take things one day at a time. How long ago was your stroke?

I can’t relate personally to your specific condition but I can relate when you say it consumes you. I will say a prayer for you and please know you are not alone going through something this scary. Positivity sent your way from me.🙂

Dear jackios,
My Stroke was on May 4, 2001! The only reason I actually SURVIVED, was that my Roommate, left for work at 7:00 a.m. and my Stroke occurred at 5:00 a.m., according to my Medical Records! I was found unconscious in a pool of blood next to my bed! I now have Epilepsy, Swallowing issues, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, etcetera!! I am participating in many Stroke Support Groups, will be starting an Aphasia Group, starting a part-time job, and Publishing my Book about Coming back from Stroke! The actual title of my book, is "Misunderstood and Resilient"! The book is written in memory of my Mother, who passed away 18 years ago yesterday 10/28/00! The book's title represents my ability to bounce back from being seen and treated as a"Psychiatric Patient "all of my life! I had a misdiagnosed Non-Verbal Learning Disability; which was always treated as "PSYCHOLOGICAL"; therefore I was on 19 medications, including the Birth Control Pill at the time of my Stroke! I was put on those 19 medications to "SHUT ME UP"!!!!! I was thrown out of 7 Physicians practices at one time, was blocked from Primary Care, Neuropsychological Care, Neurological Care, Sleep Physician, Epileptologist, Social Worker, and Neuropsychiatic Care! It frankly took me from 10/09/14 to 6/27/15, to receive ANY HEALTHCARE, PERIOD!!!!! I am honestly, writing my book, so NO-ONE ELSE, has to FEEL they are NOTHING and therefore DO NOT DESERVE APPROPRIATE, NECESSARY CARE, regardless of their DISABILITY!!!!! Physicians frankly take an Oath "FIRST DO NO HARM"! That ENTIRE TEAM of PHYSICIANS is STILL ALLOWED to PRACTICE MEDICINE, WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES from the BOARD of REGISTRATION in MASSACHUSETTS! What did I receive ,MY ENTIRE MEDICAL RECORDS PLASTERED ALL OVER THE INTERNET, WITHOUT MY PERMISSION or KNOWLEDGE, PERIOD!!!!! NOW YOU UNDERSTAND the REASON I am WRITING and PUBLISHING MY BOOK!!!!! My best friend was the only person, who figured out why no-one would take me as their PATIENT! I KNOW the DIFFERENCE, between actual "CARING PHYSICIANS versus PHYSICIANS who have ABSOLUTELY NO SHAME, ARE PREJUDICED, MEAN, JUDGMENTAL, and MOST IMPORTANT, NON-CARING PERIOD!!!!!
