open heart or catheter approach for aortic valve replacement?

Posted by yorlik @yorlik, Aug 24, 2018

I am on medicaire: I need an aorta valve replacement ASAP. my cardiologist and surgeon both say I cannot have the less invasive catheter surgery as I am too young @ 65 and too healthy; the government will not allow it!?@#$#@??? HUH?? They say I must have chest cracked open instead! I am active farmer, I NEED to be able to lift heavy weights, split firewood, be my normal ACTIVE self afterwards. no diabetes, take some pills for blood pressure and it is normally 135/75. My friends say I will never be the same after they crack my breastbone! So 3 questions please:

1) is it true government will not allow healthy younger people to have catheter valve replacement procedure?
2) is open heart less risky?
3) Can I pay some myself to get catheter approach?

Thank you.

Wow. Glad you are here too! I am hoping to come back as strong as before... In last few weeks as I wait for surgery I have all 3 symptoms you mentioned. I know when I do just a little too much (like walk up steps too fast or carry a bag of dog food 30 feet - I get dizzy, so know it is needed. I will not become a vegetarian - I love my red meat too much! I also will not give up a drink now and then! Thanks for your comments and hope you the best!
