Body itching

Posted by Retired teacher @specialteacher, Jul 31, 2018

I’ve had almost unbearable itching for over 3 months. Was prescribed hydroxyzine, but it doesn’t seem to help. It started when I was in the ER having a very frightening allergic reaction. I was given an epinephrine iv, and a breathing treatment. My legs started to shake uncontrollably. Then I couldn’t breathe, was given an injection of something at that point. I’m taking benadryl and paxil but don’t know how much longer I can deal with this.

@barbarn wow guess you really have to ask all sorts of questions things we take for granted ,we can't anymore

It is frightening to me to have artificial parts added to the body because we often hear stories of reactions and rejection of parts. When facing mesh tie up repair after bladder prolapse in which your own tissue actually grows into the mesh, the surgeon insisted this was the new "mesh" not the old mesh used a decade ago which led to rejection and health issues. I have allergies to all blended materials along with other a host of other allergies and studied up the best I could and decided to have the surgery. It's been almost 3 years and no issues, just thought I pass along one success story about adding parts and pieces to our bodies.

Have you had time to research Grover's Disease or Transient Acantholytic Dermatosis, a torso specific rash (rare cases migrating to arms and legs). Few derms can recognize as it is less common and incorrectly treat it as Contact or Allergic Contact Dermatitis. My first outbreak lasted 1 year, this is normal, subsequent ones not as long lasting. I also had a biopsy done for it, but success of biopsy is based on a short window, must be in the active break out stage, mine had been broken out for 5 months already and was negative. Derm and I still have no doubt it is GD/TAD as I have all the other criteria in my history, exception being that more males get this than women.

@gardeningjunkie , I have looked up Grovers disease and see some pics. I just cant pinpoint anything yet.
Sadly, after two more calls to mayo clinic, I've gotten no where. I even called my original general physician dr there.
No help there since they're not primary drs. Keep getting told to call dermatology, which I did a third time today. They insist nothing is available until my scheduled appt in November. I'm done with it...the rejection is adding to my misery.
I'll continue on hydroxyzine, and bathing trying to keep calm and rested. I live in Florida , so I'm avoiding prolonged outdoor gardening or anything that makes me sweat .
That's about it for now.

@gardeningjunkie - Hi I go to Mayo and I have a friend that also goes to Mayo. In desperation for an appointment, she was told just to come and sit in the waiting room and if they had a no show or cancellation they would put her in the slot. I would check with Dermatology and see if they do this also. Since it is an initial appointment, I would think it would be a longer appointment. Good Luck

@gardeningjunkie - glad you have not had any problems. You never know what you are going to face with all the parts they can replace.

@dazlin, I'm so sorry to learn about your frustrations with getting an appointment. As a Connect moderator, and having been a Mayo Clinic patient, I wanted to suggest using the patient portal or Patient Online Services (if you haven't done so already): https://gpsnetx.mayoclinic.org/psi/content/staticpatient/showpage/patientonline
Or the Mayo Clinic App: https://www.mayoclinic.org/apps/mayo-clinic

All you would need is your Clinic number; a few noteworthy points about both these resources:
- Request new appointments
- Find your appointment itineraries, maps and helpful resources.
- Communicate with your care team in a safe, secure messaging system.

Please let me know if the helps?

@kanaazpereira , I have used my portal in the past, I'm familiar with it. I'm not sure requesting a sooner appt on there would help, but maybe expose my frustration
When you say, Care team...who would that be?
Dermatology? My oncology dept?? They already know, and told me call dermatology...so who do I write to? Thank you for your help

I am seen at the University of Texas Medical and first the dermatologist gave me a cream. It worked. Then I saw my RA doctor and she prescribed a stronger med. It stops but the very next day there will be more marks. The ones from the RA have a WHITE top like maybe puss. But I was told that is not puss, but the color of the pimple. Look it up on the pictures of Dermatology or RA. See is they look like yours. Unfortunately, the same med does not work for each person. NOT ONLY that, they told me no HOT SHOWERS. WHAT? I pretend I did not hear them. I cannot bring myself to take a cool shower.. I guess I aggrivate the rash. So mine is due to RA.
