HEART VALVE TRANSPLANT AND SUBSEQUENT ALLERGIES
My husband had a heart valve transplant four years ago (animal, not mechanical). In the past few years, he now is prescribed a medication, takes it once and it is fine, and then the 2nd time has allergy symptoms. He never had this before. Amoxicillin-anyphylactic shock, Clemdomyacin- rash, itchiness, currently is on prednisone, furosemide and cymbalta- face flushed and upper chest, minor rash, another one I can't think of at the moment , after he took it for ten days, his hand started peeling another allergic symptom. Before all dental work he has to take antibiotics, but now he can't take amoxicillin, clemdomyacin, Keflex.... our doctor is trying to decide what he can give my husband before his next dental work. It is just interesting to me that all of these allergies have popped up since the heart valve transplant (also had quadruple bypass at the same time). I wish I were a scientist, I would like to investigate to see if there is a correlation between the transplant and subsequent allergies.

Hello, @ejs001 -- I noted you just joined Connect today and wanted to welcome you.
I truly hope things are going well for your husband heart-wise post-transplant. Great that he was able to have that done.
That is a very interesting question about the heart valve transplant and subsequent allergies.
I thought you might like to meet a few members who have talked about heart-related transplant, like @lottyfeeble21 @glinda @buckeyegurl @lupedelarosa12 @fatherscaregiver. Hoping they may have some thoughts for you on a possible connection between the allergies and the transplant. I also wanted you to meet @rosemarya and @contentandwell.
@ejs001 -- sounds like you mentioned this to your husband's primary care provider, which is wise. Have you gotten to ask him or her about this development of allergic symptoms and any correlation with the transplant?
@lisalucier @ejs001 I have not had any allergic reactions, but have had some other reactions -- primarily diarrhea from the immunosuppressants. Other than that I'm good, thankfully.
I did suddenly realize recently that when they say to take the immunosuppressant either with or without food that perhaps if I changed my schedule and take it without food, my problem would improve, which it has. Primarily I did it though because the long-term effects of any drugs can be problematic. I went from taking four mg a day to 2.5, so I am very pleased about that. I end up setting an alarm to wake me up at 6:30 to take my pills, then go back to bed for another hour before I get up and have breakfast. It's a nuisance, particularly if I cannot get back to sleep, but I'm working on it, and I think for me it's the right thing to do.

Hi, My father has not had any allergic reactions to his medications. As mentioned by @contentandwell, he did have diarrhea caused by his immunosuppressant.
@ejs001, I join others with a Welcome to Connect.
I am a transploant recipient, and I am wondering if you mean 'heart valve surgery'. Here is some information about heart valve surgery that I would like to share with you.

Have you investigated the Heart and Blood Health group?

May I ask what kind of animal valve was used? I had an aortic valve replacement two years ago and my doctor used a cow valve which requires no additional medications. So far so good.
@giller198 most of time its either a cow or pig valve they use
I had the cow valve and had to take coumadin for 3 months and then a 30 day monitor of the heart . The readings from the monitor showed minor afib so the specialist cardiologist did not want to add any medications at this time and I am not scheduled to see him for a year. My regular cardiologist did prescribe Xarelto daily though. I had the surgery in February and was in the hospital for 15 days because I was allergic to Heparin and became anemic. It was the first time I was ever in a hospital and hopefully my last. I have not had cardio rehab because I have arthritis in the hip and was limited to what exercises I could do. According to the surgeon I'm good for 20 years! 🙂
@giller I had a triple by pass in 1996 so you have longevity with anykind of heart surgery TheDr when he did mine told me it was good for 10 yrs. Little did he know lol
That's terrific.....22 years no problems ! 🙂
@hazelnut Surgeon did a great job and God has keep me going ,good diet@exercise is the key also saying no at times when tired .hope you have the same 22a still going Im 75 soon 76
