Does Mayo Clinic use stem cell therapy for neuropathic issues? Have any of you tried stem cell therapy?

Yes I have had stem cell therapy for neuropathy in my feet and legs. I had injections in my legs. It cost me $11,000 and it has been 6 months and no improvement. It was done through a local clinic. The clinic had a conference at a local hotel and showed a film on stem cell injections will cure neuropathy and had people who testified that they had the stem cell injections and how it helped there neuropathy in there legs and feet. All I have to say it did not work for me and I’m out $11,000!

@dcl1128 Thank you for sharing your negative experience with stem cell therapy. We all must help each other learn about treatments that are over promoted and ineffective. As @johnbishop tells us....there is no cure for neuropathy. However, there are reasonable and sensible strategies for coping with the effects of this pretty devasting condition. May you be safe from suffering today. Chris

I have just been to conference at a local hotel showing basically the same information and stating that it will cure both diabetic and peripheral neuropathy. Offered at a discount price of $5312 per shot. They also stated that the shot can be split in 2 and applied in each leg. I have been trying to find a reliable source of info to verify or not the effectiveness. I just joined here within the last hour. I am sorry that it did not work for you but at the same time you have helped myself and many others to avoid this type of false and predatory claims. THANK YOU !!

Thank you for your post. My husband suffers from neuropathy and we just attended a similar conference and he wanted to sign up. Have you had any improvement since February?

Hello @rcicchillo, welcome to Connect. I saw your post in the Search - It can help you! discussion and it looks like you found the discussion you wanted. I'm glad you are doing your own research and not relying on a lot of the advertising hype on stem cell research for neuropathy. Here are some of the links from earlier posts in this discussion that hopefully will provide more information for you.

I'm hoping other members will be able to share their experience with you. Are you currently considering stem cell treatment for neuropathy?

Hi, @rcicchillo - I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Researching neuropathy and options sounds both wise and caring for your husband. Glad you connected with @johnbishop.

Hoping that @alphawolftom and also @stanstory who were looking into it will have some information to share about whether they pursued stem cell therapy for neuropathy. What did you decide to do?

Hello @jlsoerens -- Welcome to Connect. I have no medical training or background but I've not read any breaking news about the use of stem cell therapy for neuropathy. I did a search and could not find any posts related to anyone who has tried it. However I did find an interesting article on using stem cell therapy to treat arthritis.

You might want to post your question in the following group where there are a lot of members with many different treatment experiences:

@jlsoerens may I ask what your neuropathy diagnosis is? Are you able to share what type of treatments you have tried? I have idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy but only have numbness in both legs and feet. I do not have any sharp pains that go with it.

I've had blood work, numerous EMG's and no real information or diagnosis on what type I have, how I got it, or where to get any help, other than prescribe Gabapentin. I keep asking and suggesting being tested for nerve damage from a spinal fusion I had in my low back in 2002. I never had any sort of foot pain or issues prior to that and from that point on, things just keep getting worse. My husband and I saw a documentary about stem cell therapy either on Amazon, Netflix or YouTube. You can probably google it, however, I couldn't find it again. They talked convincingly about stem cell ltherapy for MS and many other health issuesl. I'd really be interested in seeing if it could help.

@pjfrahm, I think there have been successful stem cell treatments for some health conditions but neuropathy is not one of them. From what I have learned the science is not there yet and there have been no clinical trials specifically for neuropathy. I think there has been research done on animals with some success so there is still hope. I would love to hear different from anyone who can provide evidence.

Here is a post earlier with some of the research links that have been shared here on Connect.

Has anyone tried stem cell therapy for their neuropathy and had any luck? Where did you go for treatments, did your insurance cover it? I've read quite a bit about stem cell therapy and would be more than willing to try it if it helped ease the burning, tingling, numbness, pain, etc.

Hello @pjfrahm, I can tell you that I'm pretty sure insurance doesn't cover it and I don't believe it's even had any clinical trials to prove whether or not it works for neuropathy. You might want to read through the above discussion and learn what other members have shared.
