Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

@randyr There's some evidence to suggest that rinsing then pre-soaking raw or even low-sodium or canned food a couple of hours then boiling and draining and rinsing again before finishing the cooking might help remove some of the oxalates. See pdf file in my earlier post.

Thank you. I do that now, but mostly, I’m avoiding high oxylate foods altogether.

I would like to share a rough draft of a cookbook I've been working on. Please, please, please feel free to offer corrections and suggestions and by all means try some of the recipes and let me know what you liked or didn't like and what turned out/what didn't..

@colleenyoung I'm glad you could upload it! I know I probably made some math errors, even some looking-up errors. It will be great to have help making corrections. And thank you for all you do!

Hi everyone, I have read these testimonials and feel more positive that I can improve on my 33% GFR. I have been on prolia injections every 6 months for quite a few years now. I have been so stressed and scared about all this. I got my last Proliaa injection on 2/7/19 and then I went for my annual checkup with my primary after blood work on 3/12 and my GFR had dropped from 43% to 34%. On a repeat blood draw on 3/19 my GFR showed a drop of another 1%. I truly am stressed. I have an appointment with a nephrologist on 3/29. Wish me luck.

@lucindasto, I want to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am happy for you to have found some encouragement and support already by reading what others have shared. That is what Mayo Connect is all about -Patients sharing, asking questions, and supporting others who are like themselves.

I certainly send you my thoughts, hopes, and wishes for a satisfactory meet-up with your nephrologist next week. It sounds like this might be a new referral for you. So I have found some information that I would like to share with you as you prepare for your appointment. Here is a link to the Diagnosis and Treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease - where you will find the section - Preparing for your appointment. It suggests taking a family member or friend along if possible, because it can be hard to remember everything that the doctor will tell you. There is also a list of basic questions to ask your doctor.

Thank you for reaching out today.
I look forward to hearing how your appointment goes for you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Everyone, I think this is the best place to celebrate my YAY! Happy Salsa Dance Day! I am still in hospital following a large upset for me (details in Just want to Talk) primarily treating bladder infection/autonomic neuropathy/high creatinine/low immunosuppression levels with high doses of IV steroids, IV antibiotics and secondary medication changes. Today my labs report eGFR of 37!!! That is the best it has been since before my pancreas transplant in January 2011. My creatinine is 1.42!!! Again the least it has been since 2 years following the pancreas transplant. My labs are all in normal ranges and the lowest of my high trends except for the Tacrolimus, which is still 12.4 when it should be no more than 8. I am confident that will come into line quickly now that the infection is under better control. Weaning off all IV meds has begun so discharge is in view.

And no . . . This is not an April Fool's joke. It's all real and good!

Yay! WTG! Yippee! I'm so glad to know you're doing much better. Sorry to hear you had to go to the hospital but it sounds like just the right place at the right time. Hope you continue to improve more and more.

@2011panc You must be totally jubilant! That's really exciting to have such good numbers after having disappointing ones for so long. I can almost feel your relief from here in NH! I hope this continues and you are home and healthy in a jif.
