Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

So you can only do the Reclast for five years? Did you have good bone density increase while on the Reclast? Did you retain your increase after going off Reclast? Or did you take a different medication after the Reclast? My Endocrinologist has me on Forteo for two years, and then wants to switch to Reclast, so I’m curious about everyone’s experience.

@jmanj yes you can only take the reclast for a few years. You might want to ask about the number of years as things are always changing. I did not increase bone density but I maintained for 4 years. I took no other med for op after the reclast. This last year I went down, so they think I should do the prolia shot now. They say I cannot repeat the reclast infusion. I was at -2.5 and went to -2.6.

Yes! Side affects are horrible. Read University of British Columbia in Canada recent report on Prolia.
You are not alone. In other countries this drug comes with a Black Box Warning!

Hello cindydee and others. I had Reclast with no problem before starting treatment for my cancer, Multiple Myeloma, with no problem. When I started monthly infusions it was called " Zometa". The first two times it caused major bone pain. A MM patient shared information she learned - take daily Claritin. It reduced my pain immediately by about 80%. One of my cancer treatments caused the same pain. Again, significant relief when I tried using Claritin those months while getting those infusions. This summer a drug rep for that cancer treatment explained the science behind that use of Claritin. It may be worth a conversation with your physician. My PCP encourages continued use since Claritin is essentially"harmless". I now get Zometa quarterly and see no side defects while taking Claritin. That pain is pretty rough, not your imagination, and to find relief is a gift. Good luck going forward. If you have opportunity to give this a try, will you please share your experience? Blessings. Nancy

@cindydee Was it a rheumatologist who did your injection? my insurance company requires a rheumatologist to inject it. I haven't done it. Primary care doctor to check on my phosphorus level.

My yearly IV reclast was initiated by my rheumatologist. I no longer see him since I cannot have arthritis meds due to kidney risk. The Zometa is now part of cancer treatment. After a year of monthly treatments it is now quarterly. Never questioned or challenged by insurance. Have you appealed a decision of denial? Your oncologist could certainly make a good argument on your behalf. Maybe others "out here" have experience with this. Hope this helps. Nancy

I had chills once a month then my teeth started breaking and I had to have 2 root canals. I started having fatigue and muscle spasms in my legs and severe depression. I then started having bad severe back pain. I was always healthy before I took the recast infusion. It’s been 2 and a half years and nobody seems to know what to do to help me. I also have a numbness that starts in my right arm and triggers uncontrollable crying. The doctor put me on steroids and it’s helped but I can’t keep taking them. If anyone else has had these problems pleas let me know.

I have had several of the same symptoms. Read the university of British Columbia recent report on Prolia and an antidote. I may be reprimanded, but I returned to my Chinese doctor who prescribed a herb tea that has the same herbs as U BC Canada wrote a resesrch paper. It has helped me tremendously. Cleveland Clinic has been approved to administer Chinese herbs as well.
Accupunture has also helped my Jaw
Pain after my painful root canal and femur impact fractures. Just be very careful who you speak with regarding Chinese herbs and note U of Washington in Seattle just opened a facility in Seattle Chinatown. I would be willing to share more with you. I know how life threatening the Osteoclast experience is...but I have found healing and hope. Best
