Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Thank you, @llwortman. I have not checked all of that out but I will now. As I said, my appointment is not until January unless I get called from being on the waitlist. I think it’s an obligation of the patient to be informed before an appointment like this but there are some doctors who do not like that, assumably because they are arrogant and prefer to be treated like a demigod. I hope this doctor is not one of them.

@lioness I’m not exercising as much as I should due to still having pain, but I am trying to do some. I am gradually working up to them.
I always try to bring a list of questions and no one is kicking me out until I have answers!

Be your own advocate. If the physician you are paying doesn’t communicate respectfully, have you thought about getting a new physician? It’s our bodies and we must go with our gut feelings! It’s our life and Osteoclast has become regret! I push to exercise and sleep better and sleep is healing Keep up your greT work.
All the best;-)

My experience is that specialists like orthopedic n rheumatologist are just a few in some areas so it's really hard to get an appointment sooner. That's a issue outside of the doctors ' control.  There r suggestions how to improve situation but beyond this discussion group. Sorry.

Have you read the Osteoclast medical reports that have been conducted in Europe? Canada? Did you see that both countries have black warning labels on some Osteoclast?
Do you ask your docs lots of questions about how bones build up? Why do these medications cause more fractures? Why do bones naturally build up AND tear down daily? What is the antidote if your bones react negatively with impact fractures while on or recently taken off the Osteoclast? What jaw and dental problems may happen?
Best,

@llwortman I googled osteoclast and its definition is "a large multinucleate bone cell which absorbs bone tissue during growth and healing.", it does not sound as if it's also a medication. I'm confused because you sound as if you are referring to it as one of the medications that are used for bone building or maintaining. Which medication are you actually referring to?
Thanks.

@llwortman I guess I’m just confused. I googled and it didn’t say it’s a “bone cell”. Obviously it does affect your bones too. It seems counter that it can cause fractures too. It does mention that it’s used for people on steroids like prednisone, which I am. I take a small dose of prednisone daily.

Good Evening @lindawinn, welcome to Connect. You have described my bodies reaction to Boniva, It appears that all biophosonates are not good choices for you or me. Have you talked with your prescribing clinician? When is your next scheduled infusion?

The major issue for me was the fact that I had side effects every month for four months. This is not a medication that my body grew to tolerate. My PCP stopped this treatment and referred me to an endocrinologist.

After some research and more tests, I chose Tymlos. The injections are daily so if you need to stop because of an issue, you only have one day’s medication to deal with. The product does not require refrigeration. I am now on month 5 of 18 months.

Good luck with finding a good fit for you. May you be free of suffering. I am here for you. Chris
