Other causes of failed PEth test for alcohol abuse?

My daughter undergoes periodic peth testing for alchohol abuse. She fails regularly, although swears she drinks NOTHING. We have reason to believe she is telling the truth. Assuming she is indeed not drinking, is there a physical condition or ailment that might produce positive peth tests? She is 29, has enlarged lymph nodes, some kind of mysterious condition that gives her severe hives, etc. We are wondering if some type of autoinflammation or autoimmune condition might explain elevated levels. Our daughter is FINALLY discussing this with her regular doctor but if it is some unusual condition a specialist will be needed. The reason the peth test is required is due to a nasty custody dispute with lots of allegations of misconduct. I just want to know if there is ANYTHING other than alchohol consumption that can lead to positive test results. Any thoughts or knowledge of cases? Thanks for reading.

Hi, I am a heath care professional. I self reported for opioids in Aug 2019. I spent 10 days in detox and 12 weeks inpatient rehab. I passed weekly urine and 4 hair tests for alcohol and drugs plus metabolites. I have severe degenerative back disease and I have had lumbar fusion at L3-L4. I am required to have urine and Peth tests via the USDL lab in Illinois. My very first Peth was positive with a level of 80ng. I was told I have been drinking 2 glasses of wine with dinner for 2 weeks Or 2 binge days. I Don’t Drink!! I never have!! I was told I could have a B sample tested in Texas for $250.00. I told them No. This is all about $$$. I told my board to keep my license. I’ll find something else to do. I’m another single voice trying to contest the results with no hope. I also think that $250 is nothing compared to your license. I’d pay it. After you’re exonerated, drop the hammer!

Thanks. The $250 was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I realize that I am responsible for all my actions past and present. But since August I have spent:
$38,000 - inpatient rehab
$. 2,500 - IOP, outpatient group
$. 200/month - drug testing+$25/test
( This is required for 5 years)
$. 250/month - Indiv. Rehab cnslg.
Plus various copays for PCP visits.

I am grateful for Rehab it saved my life. The unending expenditures are putting a tremendous stress on my family. That is another reason I have to not drink. I do not want to endanger my recovery. So the $250 was where I had to say ‘no more’. An interesting side note, yesterday my testing administrator called to inform me that they were going to test my B sample free of charge. It seems they have had a large number of positive Peth tests for the month of December. I am so thankful for this thread and the links to papers. I will let you know how my case turns out.

I can tell you 100% from my wife’s experiences with the USDTL Peth tests, there are false positives.

We mostly had hers at one specific test center in Dallas. I blame them. If you lab does not open you clean kit in front of you refuse to take the tests there if you can.

If you keep having problems and are willing to spend the money we saw no such issues with the blood drawn tests from LabCorp. My wife had conflicting results from these tests taken minutes apart from failed USDTL tests. I personally think all the peth tests are crap. But maybe the blood drawn one is less crap.

For what it is worth one of the other guys on this forum had very similar results but took the USDTL at different collection facilities. But he was also failing at the same test facility in Dallas.
