Liver hemangioma/liver resection

Posted by phillrachel @phillrachel, Oct 26, 2017

I have been referred to mayo for a giant liver hemangioma to discuss liver resection surgery. Has anyone had a liver resection? Just curious how the Mayo process goes and the surgery.

Hi, @sheikham1 - I wanted to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. Glad to hear you are coming to Mayo Clinic for your surgery.

I thought you might like to meet some others who have talked about liver hemangioma, like @phillrachel @meg4434 @donna38, so they can offer some thoughts on the condition and your upcoming surgery. @rosemarya has experience with liver-related surgery - transplant - at Mayo Clinic, and may have some thoughts for you. My own father-in-law had liver surgery at Mayo Clinic as well (related to metastases from neuroendocrine cancer), with wonderful results.

While we wait for others to join the conversation, I thought this Mayo Clinic information on liver hemangioma might be useful: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/liver-hemangioma/symptoms-causes.

How are you feeling about your upcoming surgery, @sheikham1?

@sheikham1 - I join Lisa in extending a welcome to you. I am unfamiliar with the condition-liver hemangioma, but I have experienced liver transplant surgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester. I would be happy to share any information from my own experience if that might be helpful to you.

I want to resend you the link that Lisa included in her message.

@sheikham1, I want to drop in to say that I hope you are doing okay with your waiting for surgery. Have your sisters learned if they will be able to come to be with you?

Hi, I have a large liver Hemangioma. I have been told by a doctor that if I ever got hit in this liver area (car wreck or anything else) that I could bleed out before I get to the hospital, because it's very Vascular. I didn't know that a liver Hemangioma could be resected if needed 🤔.

I too was diagnosed with a large liver mass 10.2 cm (not cancerous) and was told to have it resected. They injected seeds to cortorize the mass in April and prevent it from bleeding out. At the follow up I was told that my liver could collapse and I can now still bleed out. The surgeon addrd that my Hepatic veins are integrated within the mass and I won't make it off of the table. My prognosis is 6 months to a year to live.

I have gigantic liver hemangioma, accidentally found on MRI on my back. General surgeon said it was the largest he has ever seen. He also mentioned that I could bleed to death if I am ever hit hard on the liver area. No surgery for me even though it was mentioned 10 to 15 years ago. I just hope that liver hemangioma won't affect my liver functions.

Hi! I was wondering if you ever did anything about your hemangioma? I have one too and lost in what to do as I’m getting very different opinions, and really want another baby 🙁
