Partner with early signs of dementia & APOE 4 breaking up with me

Posted by a23studio @a23studio, Jul 28 7:10pm

Hi all, I’m not sure I’m in the right place, but I’m devastated over recent events. My boyfriend of 8 years learned he has two copies APOE 4. He learned those results two months ago in the middle of a trip of a lifetime with our friends. Since then, he has started showing signs that he saw in his mother and brother. He just ended our relationship because he doesn’t want to be a burden. I understand that, and his love for me is beautiful, but I am truly devastated.

A family friend (a doctor) discovered she had this gene APOE 4. She is in her sixties and is on a special regimen of hormones. She found a marked improvement in memory retrieval.

I’m remembering you mentioned the family (doctor) friend on a special hormone regimen. That sounds like a hopeful story. I wonder if you can please share where they go for that treatment?

I’m at day 96 since he ended the relationship. I’ve been unsure about posting here because I’m not really a caregiver.

I understand why he is going through this solo. He doesn’t want to change how he thinks of himself if he declines in front of me. He’s trying to wall off the 8 1/2 beautiful years we had together because he doesn’t know what his future will hold.

The neurologist ordered him to put on weight and start cardiovascular exercise. He has a PET scan in a couple weeks.

He failed the MOCA test but said that his hippocampus is still at 93%.

He said he’s a little unsure if the neurologist is on the right track for him.

In the meantime, I’m grieving this relationship and this man in isolation. Reading other people’s posts, I see that this group is very familiar with the isolation that seems common with this disease. My family is under the impression that I’m not moving on from someone who broke up with me because they don’t want to be with me anymore. My father is having a hard time with that and has pulled away. Out of respect for my ex’s privacy, I can’t share what’s really happening, that we want to be together. But that he is going through this terrifying experience and fighting for his life.

@a23studio She lives in New Mexico, and she is a Doctor herself so has created her own regimen. I don’t know much more than that I’m afraid. Her name is Dr. Marcey Shapiro. You could do an online search for her.
