Stage 3 kidney disease EGFR 50 percent down
I have been doing 16 8 intermittent fasting since dec 26 2025. My sugars have improved 123 now at 65 i have lost 35 pounds. however my kidney Efgr has gone from 60 in Feb. To 34 in sept. My potassium has been at 6 that was a hospital visit in may and most recently few days ago as it went back up. Why is egfr declining as im doing 16 8 and was eating protein and veg on both meals and right upto may 2026. Because of the high potassium. Now I eat whatever within reason with low potassium whole foods still doing 16 8. What's causing this thats nearly 50 percent decline since Feb.
At a loss not sure what to do.
Has 16 8 caused issue for me

From what I am reading, six months ago your eGFR was at 60, now at 34. At the time of the last bloodwork, were you coming off an infection of any kind? Dehydrated at the time of the testing? Have you had any MRI or contrast studies done since February? Any of these might cause a sudden dip in eGFR. Can you request a "re-do" to confirm an issue, or not? So much can happen in that 6 months since your first bloodwork was done.
Congratulations on the weight loss, by the way! Please check with your medical team to get their thoughts on the 16 8 eating plan, and how it might be affecting your overall health. When we have multiple health concerns, there may need to be certain precautions taken.

2 Reactions@gingerw thank you for your time. I was not ill or had an infection. I was taken off Rampiril 10mg as cause for the potassium and egfr. My kidney doc daid i need so split dose 5mg morning and 5mg night My potassium rose again was at 6 they put fluids in .me to bring it down and was taken off rampiril and on doxazosin 3mg dailysodium bicarbonate 500mg 3 x daily
Lokelma 5mg twice daily. I just don't u derstand my sugars are coming down
Perhaps I need to drimk more water. As before the 16 8 I drank alot of fluid which was not plain water I am aiming to drink to drink more at least 2 litres. Eating less s that should improve health seems to be getting worse.
Still I will soldier on as 16 8 given me energy and slimmer figure. I just hope the kidney health improves

3 Reactions@game Also, remember that when you have your bloodwork taken could make a difference in the results. Consistency in the timing of when the blood is pulled will help you be able to watch for trends. If you are not drinking plain water, could that be part of the issue? And remember, it takes a while for our body to adjust when we make dramatic changes like the 16 8 plan!

1 Reaction@gingerw hi appreciate your time in replying. With the 16 8 you say it can take a while for the body to adjus so perhaps I just need to go through the motions. I also thinking perhaps there is other medicines that needs to be looked at that maybe causing the egfr issue? More discussions with my kidney doc. I will wait and see

1 Reaction@sissieann Usually it is eating within an 8 hour window, then fasting the other 16 hours out of a 24 hour day.

1 Reaction@game I would truly caution anyone doing this type of an eating plan while having kidney or other chronic disease conditions. That can be a lot of stress on our bodies.
Hydration and balance in chemical/food levels is critical. In my opinion [not a medical doctor here!] the stress and uncertainty of it all could lead to a sudden AKI [acute kidney injury] and crash our kidney function. Not a good thing. Please check with your primary care doctor and nephrologist before you go further, and get their opinion. Look at the reasoning behind wanting to do such a food plan and weigh it with risks/benefits.

Ty for the info you give me
I’m going for first kidney appointment. I’m in 3a.
I’ve had diabetes 18 yrs controlled but I know a diabetic can be very on key but still does lots of mischief. I never thought to join a group but Kidney by what people deal with is tough. I appreciate and TY. My name is Michele. I’d love to meet everyone. Have a good nite and positive prayers I send. ❤️🌈
