Hardly any sputum today. Plus a question

Posted by grammyvictoria @grammyvictoria, Sep 9 8:55pm

If you hit a day where there's hardly any sputum to get rid of, do you think maybe its because you did a really good job the day before? Yesterday (and maybe the day before) I think I did a good job -- Still learning, experimenting, and its' a pretty new discovery to get my lungs in all different positions for nebulizing and aerobika-- anyway I think I did a good one. Today there was little to get out.
Do others find that to be true?

Also, maybe a dumb question but, when you say "Airway clearance" are you using that term to mean your Neb and aerobica and huff cough process?

@letsjustbreathe I don't think the aerobika works for me either. I have very deep seated phlegm. It wants to come up when I lay back - not when I'm doing activities and upright. So a couple times a day I have to lay back on the recliner. Big pain when you don't want to sit still. Of course I do the nebs and the shaker vest. I suppose it all works together for good. I have to take mucinex too - do you?

@ursala7 I also have to lay back in my recliner to get sputum up. It makes timing hard because I have to wait several hours after eating/drinking to lay back, due to reflux. I don't take Musinex-- it seemed to plug me up rather than helping me out.

emphysema and bronchiectasis are very different. Those of us with Bronchiectasis need to do airway clearance twice a day. That includes saline nebulizing followed by a flutter device and airway clearance positions etc. Some may find that diet helps but we still have to do the airway clearance.

@irenea8
I appreciate your clarity. I do saline nebulizing but only w Aerobika. Could you please describe how you do the Neb first and then Aerobika? Saline goes everywhere when I tried to use Pari LC sprint reusable neb bf Aerobika. Best, jessed

@letsjustbreathe I wonder if the Mucinex dries me out so badly that my infected mucus is thick. IDK. Have to ask doctor I guess.

@ursala7 I do not use Mucinex. However I was told early on by another Bronchiectasis patient to look for the Mucinex that does not have another ingredient in it that would dry up the mucus etc. I believe the one that says DM is the one to avoid?
Maybe someone else can help with clarification with Mucinex. My understanding is that we want the one without the dextromethorphan.
Do you know which one you are taking??

The "DM" in Mucinex DM stands for dextromethorphan. This medication is a combination of two active ingredients: guaifenesin and dextromethorphan.
Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps loosen mucus and clear chest congestion, making coughs more productive.
Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that reduces the urge to cough, providing relief from persistent coughing.
Mucinex DM is commonly used to treat cough and chest congestion caused by colds, allergies, or the flu.

I assume most people on this forum already know not to take the Mucinex DM. When we talk about it we are referring to Mucinex with ONLY guaifenesin.

@blm1007blm1007 Thanks Barbara for suggesting clarification: I am taking the plain Guaifenesin (not the one with the suppressent). I have had an ER doc once prescribe a cough suppressant for pneumonia. I took one dose and realized..oh, this would not be good for me! At my Target store they don't even sell the Mucinex without DM. They have every kind of Mucinex but the plain one. I have to go to Walmart 7 miles away to get that.

@irenea8 Yes, I would hope so.
Possibly those just coming on might be in the dark just yet, so as a precaution I mentioned it. I, not ever having taken much of any medication or over the counter med's was glad John mentioned what I should or should not take/look for with the Mucinex.

If I use my nebulizer wo the Aerobika there is no pressure and the saline sprays out too much. Sorry, I don’t know enough to explain it well. I will try to find a you tube Video. Dr McShane said to Neb bf using the Aerobika. I’m not sure how.

Maybe you need new cups? They need replacing every 6 months or less. But also I use the sprint cups and quite alot of saline mist is produced with them.
