Hardly any sputum today. Plus a question

Posted by grammyvictoria @grammyvictoria, Sep 9 8:55pm

If you hit a day where there's hardly any sputum to get rid of, do you think maybe its because you did a really good job the day before? Yesterday (and maybe the day before) I think I did a good job -- Still learning, experimenting, and its' a pretty new discovery to get my lungs in all different positions for nebulizing and aerobika-- anyway I think I did a good one. Today there was little to get out.
Do others find that to be true?

Also, maybe a dumb question but, when you say "Airway clearance" are you using that term to mean your Neb and aerobica and huff cough process?

I think airway clearance is any method used to remove phlegm. I control phlegm with diet. No nebulizer.

@crystalena How long have you been with a diagnosis of Bronchiectasis and not doing the nebulizer? Interesting.
Do you have the Pulmonary Function Tests and C Scan every so often. How are the results from the start to now. Did you ever have an infection in the lungs, MAC etc.

@crystalena Glad you remembered. I'll have to go back to it and look for that thread. I would love to not have to nebulize.
Do you remember the thread, by chance.

I came back to this post to edit it after I I found the thread. I see where you indicate you have emphysema and not Bronchiectasis and the suggestion Toni made.
Thanks for letting me know all.

Personally, I find that I can consistently get about 6-8 blobs out during airway clearance, UNLESS I use the Aerobika. The Aerobika pretty much shuts airway clearance down for me-- I get practically nothing out whenever I try it. I'm baffled.

For those days when I get very little out, I can't congratulate myself because I make up for it on the following day by getting more out than what is normal.

@grammyvictoria, Personally, I'm going with "I did such a good job, there's nothing left" 😄

And yes, my airway clearance includes nebbing, Aerobika, and huff coughing.

Here's hoping we all do a good job with clearing!

@letsjustbreathe I don't think the aerobika works for me either. I have very deep seated phlegm. It wants to come up when I lay back - not when I'm doing activities and upright. So a couple times a day I have to lay back on the recliner. Big pain when you don't want to sit still. Of course I do the nebs and the shaker vest. I suppose it all works together for good. I have to take mucinex too - do you?

What kind of diet? I can’t get any mucus to come up. Maybe a plug or two if I try really hard with the nebulizer and huffing

I don’t eat things that cause or harden phlegm . Dairy & cheeses , Pasta, Processed foods, oily or fried food . If I suffer with phlegm in the morning , I go over my diet the previous day. Having my days meals finished by 5 pm helps too .

emphysema and bronchiectasis are very different. Those of us with Bronchiectasis need to do airway clearance twice a day. That includes saline nebulizing followed by a flutter device and airway clearance positions etc. Some may find that diet helps but we still have to do the airway clearance.
